Going Digital!

I'm listening, too :D I bought the Micro iDSD, Micro iUSBPower, Gemini, and and Audioquest Cinnamon USB. I loved it so much so quickly that I sent it all out to AVC (Audiophile Vibration Control) to design and build a better rack system to anchor the iFi goodness into my 2 channel system. After a number of design/drawing iterations, prototyping, and testing - production has begun :D I'm beyond excited to get everything back!!!!

Nice stuff KT .. interesting..
I don't have much experience with different tube flavors.. I do own a 6L6 tube amp and sounds good in its butter zone but doesn't quite have the connection with everything as the el 84 Leben has. Nor does it wow me in low level listening as does the Leben.

Thanks.

After 12 years of tube researching and rolling, I'd think that at some point I'd come across certain combinations which are better at relaying the finer points of music more so then other brands which some would've us to believe or the only ones worty of pursue.

But I can definitely understand your fondness towards the Leben and EL84!, as mentioned I'm not going back, nor looking laterally for something that's merely different, not better as it relates to involvement or purity of notes, I'm riding this one out.

Enjoy your wisely selected system, as it seems that it moves you........, and in the end, that's main task.

Be well.....

I was wondering why nobody had mentioned anywhere about getting appropriate cables.

You have to be really careful when buying cables lest you be rope a doped!

For those who believe in cables..... It so easy to find a very nice looking cable online from some one who purchased bulk wire, put a nice cover on them....write up a nice report with lots of smooth jargon which means nothing and put it on the web site, pay some hot shot reviewer to write up a spiffy review, and then sell his cables as the best and really no real science has gone into the cable making process at all, that's why they sound like crap. Lots of that stuff is going around.

Not saying the Gemini cable is as such, because their parent company (Abbingdon Music Research) is a real company, with a very positive reputation that's been around a long time. But just know some of that stuff is going around. Wireworld is such a company that has real science, Analyst Plus has real science, Kimber Kable has real science, Triode Wire Labs and a lot other cable companies have real science. And they all have different flavors, do different things and takes care of the needs of many audiophiles. Just find what works best for you. I've used Wireworld cables a lot over the years as well as A+. Its just a matter of finding what works to get your sound to "Clicking"!

For those who don't believe in cables...disregard the about and carry on as normal.:D

I am utilizing the Oppo 105D as my Dac as well as my pre via DH Labs Revelation Silver Sonics & Leben.
Yes I really like the dac in the Oppo 105.

Another good company with real science behind their cables.....and I was recommended the Silver Sonics by some one over at Computer Audiophile....nice cable from what I heard and read.

Congrats Livestrong on joining the iFI fold!!! Please do not take this the wrong way but ditch that AQ Cinnamon cable. Its a weak link in a other wise awesome setup. Go look for a Silver or Silver plated Copper USB cable. For the same kind of money you can get into pure Silver Pangea USB cables. I have a AQ Forrest and Cinnamon USB cables laying in their boxes because they were simply out-classed by the Pangea's. I may follow Slipper's lead and go try some of the Wire World cables here in the future. The iDSD will get better with some hours of use on it. It takes about 15 hours of use when it starts blooming and gets better on through 150 hours of use or so. Again Congrats!

Hi livestrong,

It's nice to see you're still with this thread, as I'm finding more and more to love about these products with each passing day, and am personally waiting to see your new stand for your iFi gear - but I've to agree with Lee Harvey on the matter of said USB cables - as Byron has told me over the phone and I felt he was talking through his neck but upon hearing the WW Starlight USB in my system with my own ears............, it was clear this is one of those rare matches made in Heaven and if one feels the need to spent more, I've to ask why?.

But I've spoken with my contact over at the Cable Company and intend on auditioning the WW Platinum Starlight - Acoustic Revive USB 1.0 LPS along with the Wywires Silver USB to see what's what!.

But I've to ask you and Lee Harvey and billfort a question, as Byron is telling me it's okay to keep the generic stock USB between say the Mac Mini and iUSB Power as he doesn't heard any difference between it and said Starlight - what's you guys takes on this?, as I was thinking at the very least to stick either a WW Chroma 7 or Ultraviolet 7 USB cable in this location, as I can't stand looking at what looks like a $1.00 printer cable to me - maybe I'm being overly anal?, but appearances count to me, as does sonics, so what say you three?, does a USB in this location matter of not?.

:scratch2:_oh

Nice comments Oscar!

I can't say enough about the iDSD/iPSU gear. I am so greatful to Lee Harvey for suggesting it to me. There's some real, great engineering going on in the iFI Micro! After all, the parent company has been around for a while.

Thank You Byron for trusting my opinion about the iDSD and iUSB after I purchased mine back in October and started messaging you about the duo. I am so glad that you are happy with them. Also thanks to you and Oscar for spreading the Gospel about iFI gear so much more eloquently than I ever could.

Of course I feel like a dummy today for not looking in the iDSD's box and figuring out what that adapter in the plastic bag was for. So now I have a Pangea 1 meter pure Silver cable coming from my PC to the iUSB. Then have a half meter pure Silver cable with the adapter running from the iUSB to the iDSD. Those are followed by the Kimber Silver Streaks to my amp. Replacing the stock cable from between the iUSB and iDSD with the Silver cable notched up the performance a little bit more today.

One other part that makes this setup a trifecta is the use of J River Media Center and upsampling everything to double DSD output. J River just started offering a universal license and an universal upgrade for 19.98. This allows you to run a copy of JRMC on multiple machines being PC's or Mac's. My 7 year old Macbook did not have the horsepower to up convert music files to double DSD without stuttering and drop outs. So its been replaced by a quad core i5 Acer mini tower with 2 TB of diskspace as my music server. Works great. Also I can keep a copy of JRMC on my MacBook pro and Windows copy on the Acer using the universal license. One other cool thing is the J River Gizmo app for Android phones and tablets. That way I can control the J River on my PC remotely with my Samsung phone or tablet. I can use the app to listen to music through my 2-channel setup or play music through my tablet to my headphones at night streaming from the PC. Pretty cool! The Mac version of JRMC only at this time upsamples to double DSD but the Windows version can do 4x and 8x DSD.

I am waiting for someone around here to purchase both a iDSD, iUSB and a Chord Hugo for shootout between the two DACs. Both the iDSD and the Chord are portable DACs that do all flavors of PCM and DSD. It's just that the iDSD costs a lot less. Both have cutting edge technology in them and both have been very well reviewed. So who out there has the deep pockets to try this out? I am pretty much spent for now due to Christmas, two new sets of tires for my cars and tax time coming up soon.

I used Wireworld Gold Starlight 7 XLRs with my Classe CA 2200 amp and they were awesome. I still have them but I am currently running with the Leben amp which has no xlr inputs.

Do you think this would have enough horse power:

If I upped the RAM to 4GB? It would be for music only and I'd use a 4TB external HD for the actual file storage.

You could try a xlr to rca converter? Dont know how they will effect the sound tho. http://www.dedicatedaudio.com/inc/sdetail/2246/545

Or you can contact WW to see if you can buy a set of RCA's or send them back in...I do think you can buy their RCA connecters some place tho.

Good evening Lee Harvey,

Thanks for acknowledging our efforts to info others on what all of us have come to view as components worthy of their attention - but since you've mentioned having your pure Silver cable between your PC and the USB - I've to once again ask did you hear any differences with said USB cable in this location?, or would my thinking to add something better then the stock USB here a waste of money as Byron thinks?, as I'm once again not totally convinced if I want to buy into leaving things as they stand.

Thanks for the tip on the JMMC and JRemote as well, as a few guys here including Byron have spoken quite highly of it, it seems I've to give it a go after all - and weird thing is, as I just spoke with one of my buddies over at the Cable Company whom upon telling him I wanted to borrow 3 - 4 USBs to sample with the iFi stuff mentioned he knows their sound well as he uses them with headphones and how he felt it was on par with said Chord Hugo!, so that got me to thinking what another audio insider had mentioned about their comparison as well, and then to have Byron mention it as well, and now you........, I can't speak for others, but I'm truthfully starting to think that we are all very fortunate to have discovered the wares of this companies products........., because in my mind.........., it's the sound of beauty - purity and tonality unlike many more costlier units I've heard over the years.

My intent is to get to where you guys are with the whole DSD64/128 downloads and enjoy, as mentioned I'm merely listening to them with my standard iTunes Music Library and am moved to tears with what I now hear as very very very very involving.

I shall continue to watch and read as well........, that crap about not being able to teach an olde dog new tricks is straight up BS!, I'm very capable of learning what concepts are correct - just show me the way, and stand aside I'd say.

Thanks to all of you for making me realize just what was possible for a mere $700, in the olde days one couldn't get a decent British made CD player of that amount, but in reality here we're talking about devices that I think are in fact more then capable as Byron has stated can put a few expensive turntables to shame without breaking a sweat, but as always some might find said statement subjective - but I'd care less - I hear/feel what I do, and I'm loving it.

Be thee well......

Livestrong, I am afraid that model cannot have its memory upgraded. See this article: http:// http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook-air/specs/macbook-air-core-i5-1.6-11-mid-2011-specs.html

I would not use a machine with less than 4GB of either Mac or Windows. That i5 processor would probably be fine to use. I would look for either a 2011 to 2012 Mac Mini or Mac Book Pro. All of those models can have their memory and hard drives upgraded and they have either a dual core or quad core i5's and i7's. My Mac Book Pro is a late 2012 15" model with a DVD drive. Any ones after that do not have a DVD drive anymore so you would have to use an external drive for ripping CD's. I have upgraded mine to 8GB of ram and a 512GB solid state drive. But you can also find a Windows machine with a quad core i5 and 8GB of ram for $599 or so and run JRiver MC on it too. Either machines should work fine for you. Use whatever you are comfortable with. I can use Macs, Windows, Linux, IOS and Android. Each one has its plus's and minus's.

Well, I actually have this one at home now:
MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2011), 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, 128GB SSD

I used to have a late 2009 Mac Mini with 8GB RAM and 120GB SSD - it was PERFECT and built to be a music player. I already have all of my music on a 4TB drive so having a drive built in isn't much of a concern - my plan was to get the AirPort Extreme to hook the hard drive up to (it is currently connected to my wife's iMac). The reason I wanted to run the MacBook Air is because then I wouldn't have to worry about a monitor, mouse, and keyboard and I could always unplug it from my Hi-Fi system to use for casual web browsing (mainly what my wife and I use it for today). And I thought, hey, for $450 I could have another one in the house and ditch the iPad Air my wife has (we use the MB Air a lot more). I suppose I could just try it. Hmmm...

Still following along here but with the swing towards in-depth wire & mac discussion, I don’t have much to share (and I even use a different DAC! :)). My experience with the Concero HD is limited to a few generic USB cables, one highly regarded (FWIW) USB cable - Wireworld Starlight 7 - and various DAC to pre-amp interconnects.

My approach is quite different from what I’m reading here but our end game seems to be the same. Streaming (all) digital files as DSD128 to a good DSD DAC has elevated digital to the point where it’s knocking on the performance door of my turntable and sometimes, surpassing it. The cool part is that it’s at a price point about 1/6 of what I have in vinyl playback, I am using cheaper, easier to obtain media and it is way more user-friendly & convenient.

If I try to quantify the improvements I’ve realized over the last few years with digital though, wire goes way down at the bottom of the list and I just confirmed that over the last few weeks by living without the Wireworld USB cable (I loaned it out for another opinion). Yes, I think I lost a little of the black background I had where instruments and vocals seemed to stand-out with a touch more clarity and detail but the effect is damn subtle to me – worth the $100 that cable costs but I’d want to carefully audition anything higher up the food chain. I just think there are better ways to spend your $ here, at least based on what I’ve heard so far.

The BIG payoff – that decent DSD DAC & feeding it well with DSD128 - and there are other options besides iFi (although I can’t think of any I’d consider at $500). Next on my list would be software (assuming a capable streaming machine) and IMO there is one piece that stands out from an outright sound perspective and it’s absolutely worth all of its $200 price tag.

Next would be separating & isolating the noisy (electrically & physically) hi performance player pc from the streaming appliance and getting the noise out of the room. There are certainly cheaper ways to do this but I like proven and simple so I bought a SOtM SMS-100 mini server to go next to the DAC which comes pre-loaded with (and works beautifully with) my chosen software - $450.

Then I would worry about the power supply feeding that low price DAC or in my case – both the streamer and DAC. DAC power supplies are where I think a lot of the money goes as you move up in price and the iFi is pretty cool in that the $200 iUSB supply is affordable and even has the option of being fed by another outboard linear – something that might be interesting to experiment with.

Now that I’ve spent $1350 (if using the iFi products), I might think about a little icing on the cake – wires. My personal limit is pretty low here before I’d go back through all the above; I just think my limited budget gets better mileage elsewhere. I believe much of the wire ‘advantages’ are aimed at trying to chip away at some of the stuff addressed (more effectively?) above like better USB interfaces, galvanic isolation, cleaner power transmission, etc.

But who knows, I may hear a cable that proves otherwise so I’m all ears – that’s how I got on this DSD train in the first place. :)

I think you should be fine with that MacBook Air seeing that it has 4GB of ram and is a core i5. I have done some streaming over WiFi before but not anything faster than a 44.1KHz type recording. I would prefer to use a 1GB ethernet connection if I was trying high rez recordings for playback.

I have been using an AMD single Core Phenom CPU as a music server w/o any hitches. Music really doesn't represent a large amount of data. I have high end Wi Fi (uing 5 GHz band for Wi Fi Extender and router with 2.5 GHz for connection to the extender). This allows the max performance. I can even paly computer games using this connection.

Yep! I stream 24/192 FLAC over 2.4GHz wifi no trouble at all. My Pi's only see a maximum of 15% CPU and 5% to 10% on 16/44. That's not very much for a tiny single-core ARM CPU.

Hi Oscar, I am using two matching Pagea pure Silver USB cables in my setup. One running between the PC to the input on the iUSB and the other from the iUSB's output to the input on the iDSD DAC. I do hear a difference for the better using matching cables in this setup. On the inside of the iUSB you have four pins on the USB connectors. One pin is +5 volts, one is Ground and the other two are your Data lines. On the iUSB's circuit board there are two long Gold plated circuit traces that are the Data lines that run from the input USB connector to the output USB connector. The power lines from the input are not used since the iUSB supplies its own clean 5 volts to power the iDSD or other DACs that use USB power to operate.

I keep seeing that many folks feel that the iDSD holds its own with the Hugo. One other thing they have in common is that they both have a multi-colored LED that changes color depending on what kind of signal it is processing at the time. There is one thing about the Hugo is that its USB input is using Android micro type connector instead of a USB A type which is more common. Using that micro connector kind of limits you on what is available out there cable wise. The only higher end cable I have been able to find is a Kimber at about $50. The rest are generally low quality cables made to charge cell phones.

I am glad streaming High Rez over WiFi is working good for you. Its just me being anal about preferring a wired connection for everything. :D

In fact, unless you have Gigbit switches/router in your home, you default to 50/100 MBs speed. Wireless I am using is rated at 750 MBs. The former should be plenty of speed but I am saying Wireless does have it's advantage.

I run Gigibit switches with either Cat 5e or Cat 6 cables to everything. I just have not gotten to the point of using those overpriced Audio Quest Cat 6 cables between the switches and devices yet. One other thing, where do you get those awesome Pin-Up girl photos for your avatar?
