Going Digital!

I'm DSD newbie, try to understand it first, i do mastering in wave format 192 khz 32 bit. DSD not yet known to my clients.

At home try to give DSD try via Foobar and J River but unfortunately can't find decent source file for testing.

What DAC are you using? Can you do DSD 128 on the fly?

Not yet. I'm using only sound card and the software. I've downloaded few DSD demo files and play it via J River ,sound card optical output connected to my Denon AV receiver, even i had few files only but it's sound promising.

How old is the sound card? I doubt if it can handle double DSD?

The reason for my buying the IFI - micro DSD is to get the best fidelity from my Red book files . I need a Media player that works with I tunes files. My vinyl rig is my benchmark . I want to hear what you guys are talking about . Thank you

Sorry, but I have no idea how to use iTunes files in Jriver and I've never dealt with iTunes.

Isn't your Anti-mode 2.0 after the DAC in your signal chain?

The Anti-mode is The DAC as well as the DSP - The anti mode has digital and analog inputs - The IFI will be put in the signal path before the Anti-mode . The anti-mode is in the tape loop of my CI-Audio passive pre amp
All my sources go trough the Anti-mode . I correct from 500 HZ and down
I can take the anti-mode out of the chain with a touch of a button .

Can you give me the model number of you sound card?

this is built in sound card in my 7 years old "Dell XPS 420" that has Intel 7.1 channel High Definition Audio and SigmaTel STAC9227 audio codec.

for home use and playing FLAC and wave files it sounds great.

Well, I received my iFI Nano today. I am currently charging it now. It will be a few days before I get a chance to try it.

Great news Dave,

But I used mine off the bat, by just connecting to my Mac Mini and cutting it on first which allows it to be charged faster as opposed to cutting on the DAC first which means it going off of battery mode. Either way eyes glued to the screen and email notification coming in on this.

Be well,

What up Bro! Haven't spoken to you in a while! I've been busy.....whats shaken Bro?! Go ahead and down load "Drink you sober" by Bitter Sweet, for next time you and the misses want to, in the words of Marvin Gaye...."...Get it on" with a twist in kinkiness.....let the Micro do that song right as you and the misses have fun acting like 25 year olds again.

Adding more RAM to the new i5! Also lots of great cables out there....and lets not forget either....the RCA from the DAC to the preamp is also just as important.....its receiving from the USB!

The Micro has lots of great quality technology thats been tested and compared to other like products in its class and above. I am happy to suggest you get quality through and through with the iFI products. They also introduced a new product as well, the iFI head phone amp! Its up on their Facebook page if any one is interested!

My Micro DSD DAC, never seems to let me down. Its a great little DAC! Doing Double DSD on the fly is affording me some of the best fidelity I've heard....the resolution, balance timbre and imaging......fidelity that one only got from vinyl. I still feel DSD is missing that little 5% in way of texture that can only come from records/vinyl, but only in that last 5%. Double DSD is still beyond CDP's.

But I cant stress enough.....one must have amps and speakers that are able to play high quality sound at the highest level....or one will never receive all the Micro has to offer.

What's up little Brotha,

Man I missed these last responses to your thread, I guess I forgot to reset my notification settings and lost track, but I'm doing fine and will check into that track you mentioned.........,mand we're 26 to correct you, so why should we have to act ( yeah right ) but as you've pointed out its the collective whole that outweighs the sums of its parts on getting the best from these products, yet the Vidal cabling loom has to be done by ear and then adjusted accordingly to ones system, as in some cases one needs copper based ICs or USBs, while on the other silver plated copper is essential.

Anywho, let the party begin.........., I'm in the house and plan on taking this into the wee hours and attend the after party afterwards.........., as David Bowie said " Let's Dance ".

I was thinking about Billie Holiday on her 100th birthday and found this gent - Jose James - Yesterday I Had The Blues - The Music of Billie Holiday - you can buy from HDTracks in 96/24 formats - EXCELLENT LP!!

JoseJames_YesterdayIHadTheBlues_cover.JPG

Thanks Dave,

I've been hip to Jose since his album the Dreamer, and hear him as across between Terry Callier and Kurt Elling if you will, so in that sense I've been following his output for a few years now.

But thanks for the recommendation, as I'm always looking for new demo quality recordings/tracks as it stands.

Dave,

It's nice to see someone else going through the various bit types, and reporting back your findings. Once again for me......., this has been one of the cheapest, yet most enjoyable investments I've made in my system in years, and for me while I'm certain there's better sound out there, I've to ask myself - at what cost?.

Seeming how Byron attended a DAC Party where they ranged from $5.000 - $8.000, and he told me it was a very insightful learning experience, I'm just not ready to invest heavily into this sort of stuff yet as the technology often seems to make advancements overnight and today's $8.000 Super DAC, could just as easily become tomorrow's doorstop as it becomes outclassed by say a $1.000 unit.

Scary thought, so in light of that........., I shall continue playing in the shallow end of the pool waiting and watching as things evolve. And no that I'm still waiting for you to get on with now it actually sounds in general, and let's not forgive using the correctly balanced type of USB/IC somewhere in the chain, as all of it matters.

Shall we continue?.

When I said earphones I meant it :D

Also a 50 WPC class A integrated is a lot of power :D

I really don't hear the speakers - I hear the soundstage in front of me - pretty impressive for such a close listening position.

Hi Dave,

Please don't expect to hear your Nano at its best with their standard in box cables, as mine were replaced after one track and thrown back into the box underneath everything - as they're only a means of getting one stated on this venue and shouldn't be taken seriously in the least.

But more importantly..........., my eyes were drawn to the music on your screen.........., and I can say very lovely selection there, to me.........., it's the Music that counts.

lol - I have so much it is crazy on this PC. it also helps that is a fancy quad core with 16 BG of memory and the music is on it's own 1.5 TB 10K rpm HD :D

349 artists - so far :D

And once again, it's nice to see someone with such a nice selection of music, at some point you're going to have to walk me through setting up my HDD devices totally 1.5TB as per your recommendation earlier on, I've ones formatted for Macs like G-Technology and WD Passport Edge and love their build quality.

But once again, it's all a learning process for me, but I'm eager to learn.

I received my IFI-micro DSD today - Hooked it up to the IFI - power with the silver USB cables - and a pair of DH lab silver plated interconnects . I am using Channel D
audio Pure Music Playing Red Book format in I-Tunes lossless . I can say I am pleased with the sound quality of this DAC . I am sending the signal through the DSPeaker 2.0 analog inputs . The sound is more analog like . The detail has improved
I will have to try other software . We shall see .

If its spanking brand new, it should be a little lively...it will settle down. I can only suggest you get the best cabling you can afford, and read back through this thread to find some suggestions. That DAC will only be as good as your supporting gear lets it. What cables are you using now and what speakers?

Congrats!

I am using am using Auchtung audio USB pure silver wire one is a twin lead single connecter on each side the other is a dual head like the IFI Gemini cable.
I use OHM Walsh 2000 speakers and stereo REL Q201e subs . I drive my speakers with a pair of VTL-100 el34 tube mono blocks . I agree it is a little lively

Good evening enginedr,

Nice of you to share your findings, and nicely balanced system and cabling you've there as well, know that once the iDSD has fully broken in, it gets much much better integrated into the system and only improves in the months to come. Once again like Byron I'm all to aware there are better made/sounding DACs out there, yet as always one has to spend a great deal more, and even then I see said iFi tandem as I've always viewed one of the best sounding turntables our store used to sale during my audio retail days in the Rega Planar 3 which was $550 in the mid 80s, but offered a sound while many owners still are capable of enjoying to this day, which proved then, as it proves now.........., it's not the cost that dictates musicality in so much as the designers ears and skills to produce even cheaper devices worthy of music lovers attention - Audiophools look elsewhere if you're more concerned with your street credibility being tarnished because of said cost.

And I for one am eager to hear your experience with DSD tracks via Pure Music in which I've heard is a very nice sounding audio software program and being an alternative to Audirvanna Plus and JRiver/JPlay and HQ I'm all ears as I've yet committed to one or the other out of fear I might select the wrong option for my needs, as I'm looking to go fully headless and am trying to see if Auditvanna Remote App might be avaliable soon seeming I've already paid for it, but haven't been able to use it as mentioned above, as its on my big screen tv in our bedroom, but I generally just take the Mac Mini into the listening area and use the standard Apple Remote to control things and am still impressed with the overall sound.

So again, I'm interested in the follow ups on this thread for more reasons then one, as always.........., let the sharing continue.

Be well, and welcome to the club.
