I'm inclined to believe it's the manner to which the designing team took their time to voice it according to their ears, as opposed to measurements and so on, so in my mind it's the sound they've achieved for the money - and the sound is where it differs from other brands or DACs.

Now thats some real hardward!:yes::D

As well as one hell of a brand as far as Fostex goes, wait until you've had a chance to sample their speakers or drivers........., which have a purity to them that's hard to put on paper, but I can see just why a lot of the best sounding/made Japanese products never made it stateside.

So ya listen to more DSD or more vinyl these days Byron? :smoke:

Dave....truth be told. Phono amp is up in the family room with second table and I've to purchase a much better phono amp for the one in the music room due to Micro putting the $600 phono stage to shame. So all my record playing is done in the family room on that system until I get a much better one for the music room. But yeah....I still listen and its still the media of choice, but now I'd have to say, not just DSD, but DSD 128 only in the 2 channel room.

If the phono stage is the weak link try Jasmine LP 2.0....mine with upgrade caps shamed $2k+ modded tube phono in front of a group of audience...and I was getting ready to have mine trounced big time there :yes:

There was an Avid phono available on the local secondhand classified. Was sorta tempted but the balanced inputs/outputs sorta detracted me as I don't like frills.

Picked up a Korg DS DAC 100m a couple of weeks ago, which includes AudioGate3 software. My stereo system is rather modest - NAD 7155 receiver, Energy ESM1s speakers, CDs played on an early Sony PS1, digital files up to 24bit/192Khz played by a Sony Blu Ray player. Had been wanting a DSD capable DAC for some time, but my meagre budget would not allow even an iFi iDSD Nano. Stumbled on the Korg for C$160 and sound quality has taken giant leap upward through the Korg DAC.

Fine and dandy, but how does the Korg DAC perform in a better system? Took it to a friend's, his system is Transcendent Grounded Grid tube preamp, Bryston amp, and Martin Logan Electromotion ESL speakers. He currently uses a Firestone Audio ILTW, a reasonably good 24/192 DAC. First album I played was John Harford, CD rip converted on the fly by AudioGate3 to double DSD. His jaw dropped (mine, too). Everthing we played, from Redbook CD rips, to SACD rips, to native DSD files, sounded wonderful. Today he bought the Korg DS DAC 100, which Korg says is the same elecronics in a nicer case with better connection options, for about C$315 all in. Price of the 100m is less than a Dragonfly 1.2 landed in Canada, price of 100 model is less than Resonessence Herus. More of these Korg DACs are available, but only to Canadians at the above prices. Easy to find online, and highly recommended.

I considered that Korg hard for a while too given that it does streaming conversion. Since softwares can do the conversion on the fly too I've settled with the Matrix.

Thanks for the write up.

Both examples sound superb. Extremely well-mastered. Would've liked to listen to them on my main rig.
