Going from a Yamaha R-2000 to an integrated amp

Hooked the R-2000 up again.
Guess what? Streaming services are working now – I have sound from the mains (analog/wired) as well as from the remotes (WiFi).
I swear I wired everything the same. Not sure why it works now and what was wrong before, but hey, I'll take it.

So far so good. But...

a) I have the sub connected via the Pre Out on the receiver. From what I understand the Pre-Main Coupler has to be in the off/disengaged position (pushed in). When I do that though the sound on the main speakers practically disappears, the volume is super low. I basically only hear the sub. If I engage the coupler again, it sounds fine but I lose the sub, and it's probably not recommended to couple pre and main when something is hooked up to the pre out anyway.
What's going on here? Something wrong with the pre out? And if so, how else could I connect/run the sub (Klipsch R-112SW)?

b) All the other sources (TT, CD...) still don't output any sound. Not sure why.
 
For what it's worth, I did some more testing. One of the tests involved replacing the R-2000 with a Nikko 1219 that I have as a backup, and swapping wires, plus cutting some slack on the speaker wires and getting rid of the banana plugs (connected to the posts directly with bare wires ends) and I did some other changes. Still no sound on the wired mains. Just a faint sound on th sub, but only when I crank the volume on the receiver way up (which normally would be dangerously loud).

That probably means the receiver is not the culprit. So the R-2000 may not need a replacement or repair after all.
And I can't imagine the KEF Q500 being dead — if so, wouldn't I at least hear some noise or some sort of signal?

I'm at a loss as to what's happening here. Any ideas anyone?!
Not sure how you have the sub wired into the system. Have you tried taking it out of the equation? I have had issues when I run line level signals into a sub regardless of how I have speakers wired to the system. I usually just forgo the sub and all is fine. There are line lever converters I have around but never tried it.

You are using speakers and sub on B+C or A+B?

If so, it sounds like with those receivers B+C or A+B might be series connections.

If that's the case then the high input impedance of the sub in series with the speakers means you will get very little, if any sound. And that sounds like the symptom.

Unhook the sub from the receiver and connect just the speakers and select only them. Does it work now?

Still wondering though what it means when the pre out/main in coupler works in reverse. What’s the issue? Can it be fixed?
 
Seems like it should be a simple fix.

Use the male plugs of the Y as jumpers between pre out and main in, then extend the female jack to the sub. Use one Y for left and a 2nd for right.

The powered sub is wired to the left/right Pre Out on the receiver and to the R and L/LFE Line In on the sub (the Main In on the receiver is not used).
The two main speakers are wired to the A channel speaker terminals. The B and C channels are currently not used.

Understand that now. I subsequently saw your other thread that appears to be same topic and recommended use of Y cables to branch off the pre out/main in connections.

I’m not sure if I be understand your Y cable solution above. Are you suggesting for me to use both, the receivers Pre-out and Main in for the sub? So one Y goes to L and R of the Pre Out and the other to L and R of the Main In? What’s the added Main In doing compare to what I have now?

The pre out / main in allows you to separate the two components within the receiver.

When connected by the switch the signal flows from the pre outs to the main in and out to your speakers.

When you disconnect via the switch you no longer send the signal from the pre out to the main in and no longer get output from your speakers.

The Y adapters mentioned will allow you to turn off the internal pre / main connection and allow you to "replace" the connection externally while allowing you to connect your sub to the female end of the Y adapter.

The Y splits the pre out signal out to the sub and also routes the pre out signal back to the main, which should fix the no signal you're getting when you try to do it with the switch. Probably better described in post 34.

One Y goes from L pre out to L main in, the other Y goes from R pre out to R main in.

Then, the L and R sub inputs connect to the L and R Y cables, respectively.

The main speakers, connected to the A speaker terminals, would still be fed as desired, correct?
 
I guess this whole time I just misunderstood the pre/main concept? Embarassing!
I thought I read that I should de-couple pre and main and let the pre out feed the sub, and the receiver/main would then power the speakers connected to the terminals separately. That would allow me to control the mains with the receiver and the sub crossover/volume with its own dedicated amp.

But when I read your post now I have to assume that I was wrong and that I’m actually supposed to couple the pre/main (in this case with the push button out) even when the sub is just connected to the pre out as I had it. Is that correct?
It sounds ok that way now (maybe not super clean though, but I’m not sure anymore).

Unfortunately this “brown” noise in the main speakers, when I don’t play anything and turn the receiver volume all the way down, as mentioned earlier, is still there. It’s very faint but it’s there constantly. Since the mains are not powered it makes me wonder if I have another issue here?

A receiver is several individual components in a single box.

There is a tuner to pull in radio stations.

There is a pre amplifier which provides source selection, volume and usually bass/treble controls etc

There is an amplifier to feed the signal from the pre amp to the speakers.

The pre out / main in allows some flexibility usually only available when using separate components.

You could connect the pre outs to an external amplifier and run your speakers from that amp.

You could connect an external pre amp or source to the main in and use the Yamaha to drive your speakers.

Some units have a Coupling switch while others use small "U" shaped jumpers between the pre out and main in.

The "brown" noise can come from many places. Have you tried to flip how the power plug is in the wall outlet?

Have you tried an outlet on a different circuit in the house ?

Did you clean the coupling switch ?

It may also just be that as old as the Yamaha is some transistors have gone out of spec, some capacitors may have begun to fail too. There are relays that can get dirty and make noise as well. The bias and offset may be out of spec and need adjustment. Or It just may be time for a restoration.
