If speakers are old(er) and have original capacitors and resistors, chances are, they need to be updated; especially when we're talking 30+ years old. The ESR values in caps change, their values drift, they leak/dry up, etc., and just need to be changed. Inductors (coils) are typically ok and don't degrade over time unless the wire has somehow delaminated. There are TONS of "articles" within the Speakers or DIY sub forums that talk about crossovers in general. Or just google it. But it's impossible to teach someone crossover design in a quick manner as there are so many variables involved if building from scratch.
