Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

I picked up a SAE A501 power amp at a local pawn shop for $100. Has a output rated at 250 WPC. Only thing it is set up for 220 VAC. I bought a 110 to 220 converter at RS & it works fine. I won't drive it too hard, but it does have a much fuller sound than the Yamaha M-45 amp I had been using with my Ohm FRS-11 speakers. Love those watts. Any one out there familar on how to convert this amp 220 to 110 V. That is what it originaly was as listed on the rear panel.
It always strikes me as a curiosity when some of this stuff appears to get separated from the other gear. Like, where is the preamp? REAL NICE score, probably one of those once-in-a-lifetime deals.

As a vintage hound for more than 20 years, the full list would be way too long. I'm limiting my scores to past the five years. Here goes:
ADS L-400s $12
Altec 893Cs $25
BIC Venturi Formula IVs $20
Boston A-120s $20
Boston A-60s $12
Celestion Ditton 100s $12
Dynaco A-40s $14
Electrocompaniet AW-100 $40
EPI Magnums $5
KLH 24s $10
Marantz 2230 $10
Pioneer CS-911As $10
Pioneer SX-727 $20
Pioneer SX-550 $10
Realistic ST-205 $5
Rotel RB-71 $20
Sansui G-5700 $20
Scott 166s $10
Sony STR DE-425 $20
Yamaha T-80 tuner $10
35 sealed early-70s LPs $10
too many turntables, equalizers and other gadgets to list

Again nothing from the thrifts, but picked up a nice pair of JBL L100's for $40 from the local classifieds.

They also had the p101 preamp, it was also 220V & stated so on the unit. I figured it might be easier to convert the A501 back to 110V if I can get the service manual. I have seen a number of P101's on ebay & may try to pick one up later. For now I'm running the 501 with a Adcon GTF-500 tuner/preamp & sound fantastic. I will up grade the power converter later if I can't get a hold of the scematics.

hi fellow AK'ers!!!
in the last few days i have picked up an intact, okay missing the mono/stereo button, all working The Fisher TX-1000 control amplifier for $4.00 and a great working Sansui stereo receiver model 331...also for $4.00, .... just over a week ago i found a great working and fine looking MCS stereo integrated amplifier model 3872 with function posiutions that all light up and a graphic eq with all the buttons that light up , balance slide too...3872, ..i think thats the number.... 110 rms /ch....and it works great! after a serious cleaning with orange spray clean stuff from the dollar store..

A few months ago I picked up a Sony TC-K61 Limited Edition (champagne coloured) for $19.99 at Sally Ann. Also just last week picked up an Akai HX1 Cassette deck for the same price.

Also, a really high-end Panasonic VHS for the same price, too. Somebody stop me!!! :)

So, after reading this thread, I went to the local GoodWill and they had:

1) Some cheap walkman style headphones
2) A plastic 'all in one' 'hi-fi' system with some cracks in the plastic
3) A cheap plastic automotive dwell meter/volt meter from the 70s.

Maybe I need to go to where you guys live.... :(

Timing is everything -- that's what it normally looks like at my favorite GW. But if you keep going, you come across the gems. For me it's speakers for some reason -- the electronics are always black plastic. Hint: Find out the collection area serving the GW -- nice/gentrified donation areas is the one you want. BTW: The Panasonic Thrusters are still available.

Yep, same here. One particular GW I go to had not a single thing worthwhile for months, then one day I walk out with a Micro Seiki TT (worth about 250 bucks) and a pair of KLH 22 speakers all for a whopping $12.50! :D

Timing is everything.I go at least four times a week.My latest find was out there for two hours when I bought it.I know it would not have been there at the end of the day.

I'll have to check back a few more times.

I guess I was wishing for a situation like about 12 years ago when I lived near a pawn shop in a small town. It was always filled with great musical instruments and hi-fi equipment (I bought a lot of it, like a '66 Fender Coronado for $125, and both of my present hi-fi power amps). I was almost addicted to shopping there. My theory on it was that the goods (stolen??) all came from the large city about an hour away.

Now I live in a large city, so all the stolen goods are probably taken off somewhere ;0

These are the best finds I've had. All of them were from the goodwill or salvation army.
Phase Tech PC 8.5's, Nakamichi C-5A2, Pioneer 737, Sony TA4650, M&K sat 2's, AR-11'
Lots of others but those are the ones that come to mind....I stop at both stores at least three times a week. I have to sneak most of it past my wife.

Oh Well.....

Did not know where to post this? Anyway just got off CL, and saw a "VINTAGE YAMAHA RECEIVER" listed in excellent condition. The picture did not match the output power listed in the ad. The model number was not specified in the ad. It said 90 watts per channel. Turns out it was a CR-2020.
I called the guy and it was already sold...for $75 !!!! Seems that might have been a good deal...YES?...Hope someone here got it. It was sold in Fairfax Va.

Pair of Leek Sandwich speakers at a dump yard £0.
Pair of Celestion Ditton 33's at a dump, cost: new tweeters (still stocked!), but it was actually only blown crossover capacitors £5.

After reading all the posts about Goodwill, I decided to check them out in Tampa while on vacation. I found some outstanding LPs most of which were hardly ever played. Carpenters, Glen Campbell, Roger Williams, Nat King Cole etc. Just $1.00 each.
