Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

marantz model 7 tube preamp $13 at fleamarket maybe 15 years ago.

have other good finds but that ones the trophy! traded it for my first mcintosh since the marantz had issues on one channel. was only kid in highschool with a mcintosh piece.

This past weekend @ Thrift Shop, I picked up a PIONEER PL-200 with a Pickering TL2 cart/Stylus (cart/stylus cherry in box) and a TEAC V-95RX Cassette Deck for $20. Everything works good.

Saw a Primo SX-980 @ the Flea Market (the only Stereo equip shop) ran by a Chinaman that was still in the original plastic wrap. He wanted $180.00. Gawd..... I was tempted to use XMAS $$$, but discretion better part of valor.

Killer deals gentlemen! I have had a two myself.

About four years ago, I was hitting the yard sale front, and some elderly lady was selling off her husbands stereo equipment and music, and I made the score of a lifetime.

I got a box of albums for 2 bucks. I didn't even bother to open it until I got home, and I realized that they were all MFSL & CBS Mastersound half-speed masters. Only 3 out of the 40 albums had been opened! I about pissed my pants....wouldn't you?

So I went back to the garage sale, and bought about half of the remaining equipment. I was bummed that she had sold the McIntosh MR-71 tuner for 40 bucks...wish that I had bought that instead of the albums, but I am still happy that I got something.

So, here is what I picked off of this old lady:

Pioneer PL-L1000 Linear Tracking Turntable (same as Phase Linear 8000): $60
Pioneer RT-909 (non-working...needed a belt, that was it): $20
Pioneer A-77X Integrated Amplifier (100w 8 Ohms, mint): $120
Audio Technica Precept PC-440 Dual Magnet Cartridge: FREE (I bought the table)

The only really expensive piece that I bought from her were the Ohm Walsh 2 Loudspeakers. She wouldn't part with them for less than $350 bucks. Her reasoning for wanting the 350 was because she let her husband buy them new, and she told me that she about fainted when he told her that he spend a little over a grand on them, so she wanted to get some of her money back. I have never even come close to getting that kind of deal since....how sad.

However, I got the chance to get my Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck at a garage sale. The guy wanted 100 bucks for it and I couldn't afford it at the time, so he told me that if I helped him paint his house (inside of the house, it was in the middle of December), he would just give it to me for free. I WAS THERE!!!!! I got it from him, and I found out that it belonged to his kid, and when he moved out it 89' he didn't take it with him, and when his dad (the guy I got it from), told him to get the stuff that he left behind, he told his dad that he didn't want what was left. Wow, it came in the original box, had the purchase slip from the Sound of Music, the wired remote...it looked like he used it about three times and just put it away, it had everything. I use this deck at least once a day to keep things moving, and I have never had to have any work put into it. It may not have been my best deal (getting the stuff from the old lady was better, it my opinion), but it has always been my favorite!

Wow, some people can fall into a pile of you-know-what and come out smelling like roses!
Nice score....I'm jealous!

Mike :D

Found a Pioneer SX 3800 in almost out of box condition for $ 19.00
At one of the three thrifts I haunt

And of course the Technics SL-D2 Turntable for $ 24.00

Those are my best so far :D

Always Go With Your Gut...

I went to the UPS store to purchase a few boxes and before I got a foot in the door, I 180'd outta there because of the line of folks - obviously sending off holiday packages.

I had some time left on my lunchhour and decided to head over to the GW simply because I felt I needed to. I'm glad I did.

Aside from a little candle wax spill I'll need to clean out of the grillcloth on one of the caps and some very minor blemishes, these Ohm Walsh 1's are in excellent condition and sound, oh so nice! :music: The veneer is just beautiful.

Best thrift find to date for me and only for the price of a CD.

How about a Krell KSL preamp for.................... $24.99 :thmbsp:
Absolutely mint and in perfect working condition.
I think some old lady was pissed at her husband
This thing retailed for 2499.00 Cdn in the early 90's

I couldn't run to the check out with it fast enough.:D

thrift stores are lame around here, I find all my good stuff at estate/garage sales. I seriously think their is someone picking over all the good stuff at thrift stores. I did however find a marantz cd player for $15 a few weeks ago, they can sell for over $50 on ebay..so I guess they occasionally miss stuff.

SX-424, marked $19.99; green tagged merch was 50% off on Friday at the local Savers so it was ten bucks.

Couldn't get sound from it in the store, however it looks like the tape monitor button is stuck. That may be the only problem. But it sure looks in good shape, and if all else fails, it's easily $10 worth of parts and knobs.

Today I check out the Salivation Army store in Owatonna! I'm down here with the lad for a hockey tournament.

I'm a pawn shop searcher and have been since the 70's. I'm also a Goodwill lurker. Having said that I have NO doubt I've overlooked scads of awesome pieces of the years, and now that I'm resolved to start looking seriously for a few vintage components I will regret that, but I'll come across more in time. When I was putting together my home theater setup a few years ago I came across this Definitive Technology Powerfield 15 Sub. Here are a few pics of her, one sitting next to my Velodyne which I paid far more for. Found the DT sub in a pawn shop and talked them down to $25. It looked awful, as if it had come from a VERY abusive home, but she cleaned up nice and does a decent job.

At the local recycling center today there were two large Sony XBR widescreen CRT HDTVs in the pile. Looked like they had been out in the rain since midweek, though.

My entire stereo is from goodwill, I started working there and ever since have been grabbing up things when I find a good deal. So far here's what I got:

Receiver: Onkyo TX-8211 Perfect working order, no remote
TT: Unknown but most likely JVC, with Audio Technica cartridge sounds absolutely wonderful
DVD: Denon DVM-715 Works perfectly no remote
Speakers: Technics SB-L30 had some cosmetic damage to the dust covers but sound awesome.

All told I spent about 30 bucks on everything, not bad for a guy just getting into this stuff I think.

I was fortunate Saturday. I met a CL seller and afterwards decided to check out the local GW across the street from where we met. I picked up an ONKYO TX 560 receiver, JVC JA-S11 amp, MCS 3701 tuner, and a Technics SL Q20 turntable. I just cleaned everything up. Here's a pic of the amp & tuner...running some Audio Lab AL V's on them. :music:
