Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Just got a pair of Polk Audio LS 50's for $50 (for the pair) from a thrift store. All drivers work flawlessly. They sound like I can now sell the rest of my speakers sets I've collected. These ones will be around for while...

I found a pair of Klipsch Kg4's yesterday for $30...they sound awesome...just wiped them down with some Old English scratch cover and now they look almost new again...

:sigh: aw. man. I would trade a lot of stuff for a set of those. $30???
:tresbon::drool:

Very cool thread guys... I'm a thrift shop hunter myself. The SA's by me are a joke. Lots of good finds but the prices are what you can get them for on ebay so I almost never leave there with anything. In the past couple weeks I've found:

Technics SL-1500 with Stanton 500 cartridge great working and cosmetic condition (though missing dust cover) $35

Pioneer RT-707 great cosmetic and working condition $35

Pair of Dynaco A-25's, blown woofer on one of them. good cosmetic condition with intact grills $10

Pair of Fisher XP-55b's great working, good cosmetic $10

Pair of Jensen X-45's with Jensen horn drivers, great working and cosmetic $10

Aiwa AD-F810, needed belts and sounds very dull... still working on it $9

Kenwood KX-1030 great cosmetic condition, needed belts $5

JVC 5020 great working and near mint cosmetic condition (I love this one!) $10

Tascam 302 great working and cosmetic condition $15

Bose 301 mk I's ok cosmetic, great working $10

Kawaii MX-8R rackmount keyboard mixer, perfect working, good cosmetic $10

Countless (maybe 100?) sealed TDK SA90 and Maxell UDXII cassettes at 50 cents each or less when boxed

Pair of Lovan Affiniti II speaker stands $8

I have 4 thrift shops within a few miles of me and I "make the rounds" to each of them every day at lunch. If I were to just pop in occasionally I'd probably have found almost none of this stuff. I can just walk in now and within 2 minutes tell whether they have anything new or not so I've gotten pretty good at "hunting". Still can't bring myself to sell any of it though. Not sure if I'd ever want to! Oooh and I found a Sony Cybershot DSC-U30 digital camera today for $10 so maybe I can post some pics of it all ;)

Just picked up a pair of Fisher XP-9c's for $13 for the pair. The woofers need to be re-foamed and one tweeter had a coil wire come loose, but everything else is in really good shape. the cabs are near perfect. the best part about this score is they had speaker wire hooked to the posts and on the other end where some old style pioneer speaker/amp plugs. I sold them for $15. Paid for the speakers.:D

Hello,

Do I take it correctly that you have 1 JBL 4312 that you might be interested in selling?

If so, and if not, please contact me with the particulars.

Thanks,

yall drive me up the wall with this stuff I never find !@#$ here

I used to be the same way, wouldn't find "!@#$", *ever*. You really have to go frequently to get anything. And you really need to dig through stuff. Just because they have an "electronics" section in no way implies that you won't find electronics, especially speakers or speaker stands, just sitting on top of a couch somewhere or wedged behind something. Half of my finds are like that.

opossumcrush, I need to make it up to your DAV from time to time. :thmbsp: I hit a DAV in KC south side periodically. Y'day I picked up a Pioneer SA-6800 and TX-608 tuner. Combo for $25. Would have prefered to find an adcom amp to match the pre I already have but such is karma. Some day

fuuuuuhhh.... dge. Crap dang. :tears:

That's seriously absurd. I mean, I've found some amazing things for cheap at thrifts...but a huge adcom amp for $15?? Geez.

I still can't believe it myself. I hooked it up this morning, using my Marantz 1070 as a pre. It sounds awesome, works flawlessly, sounds as good as my 555.

I go to that DAV also, they never have anything but crap. I drove by it yesterday but did'nt stop in. I got a Pioneer TX-6800 and SA-508 at my local DAV for $30.00. I need your pre-amp.

LOL, no, no, I need your amp :lmao:
I'm sure there's a name for such a dilemma.

My run today:

Sansui S-300, pair (mint): $5
JVC floorstanding omni-directional, pair (really odd things - super-cool factor): $15
Akai CS-F11 tape deck (mint): $1
Very very vintage uber-cool Victor 10-key calculator (will post a pic soon): $1
Never used original gameboy in perfect condition with original packing w/all manuals and that: $7.50

I love my life sometimes.

I'm also supposed pick up a massive set of more recent-looking technics floorstanding speakers for $20 in perfect condition in about 20 minutes. I will see how they turn out. I don't know the model yet.

I have a friend of mine that gets his equipment a different way, (I do not agree with this). He runs a repair shop for vintage and new equipment and has a lot of really good stuff. He runs an ad in local buy/selling paper for audio equipment that people do not want, (broken). Most are vintage and many do not have much wrong with them. He gets them for free, fixes then sells, that is a good profit. I don't agree with it, but the people do give them to him, so I guess it is alright. I am going to check the local Goodwill and SA for equipment, but pawn shops know the value and sometimes want more than it's worth. I did buy a vintage JVC reciever, I think it was a 5003, when I was a teenager for $5 at a yardsale, worked great. I have also picked up a few good deals off the internet, but have got burnt on some also. :)

I got my Kenny KA-5002 from a local repair guy who is really into audio. He's got a Marantz Integrated in there right now for $150 fully serviced and sounds fantastic. If you guys are familiar with the Richmond, Virginia Area, then Plan 9 music in Carytown is a great place to look for audio gear. They have a Pioneer SX-939 in there in great shape for $150.

Not audio...but two straight weeks I've stopped at the normally overpriced SA. Two weeks in a row they've had a brand new suit, with the tags still on, in my size, already altered to fit me perfectly. The first is a hand-tailored (somewhere, supposedly in Italy) grey pinstripe three-button, the second is a Ralph Lauren dark tan two-button. Total damage, less than $50. The RL by itself was probably a rather impressive multiple of the total purchase price. My job requires quite a bit of suit-wearing, so I'm always happy to score something nice for very little $.

4) Technics SA-303 receiver $10 at GW
5) Kenwood KA-8004 SS integrated amp $35 Epray
