Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

I just picked up a very clean kenwood kx-500 cassette deck for $5 at GW. It needed a new flat drive belt but sounds good now. I also finally got a panasonic rx-7700 ghetto blaster (like in my avatar). I recieved it in a trade from a coworker in exchange for a drill I bought at a yardsale for $1 and fixed and a $2 GW push sweeper. It needs lots and lots of TLC though.

I just gabbed a pair of KLH six speakers from GW for $8. They are in decent shape and sound fine. They aren't the cemented in drivers. The grills are pretty shabby. I also forgot to mention that I bought a marantz 6 disc magazine style cd player for $7 or $8 a while back too.

I have 3 different GW stores within 15 mile radius of home and they have all netted me some kind of vintage audio equipment in the last 6 months :thmbsp:.

I was at a trhift today and scored an AKAI CS-702D Tape deck for a 12,75 USD
fully working, right tape speed, records well, lamps working, overall good condition..

After a Loooo-o-oong dry spell, I found a set of Baby Advents, in black for 9.99. Refoaming them right now. No sooner did we leave that thrift, I saw a set at another, got closer and saw the ADS logo. Scooped a pair of L-420's for 5.99. Hooked them up, and both tweets were dead. Pulled the fuses out, cleaned them off quick on my jeans, and reinstalled them and POOF! the tweets sprang to life! on BOTH! yay!

my dad just gave me a pair of L420s about 2 months ago.
he just wanted them out of the house. (he's not into musical sound quality at all. don't know why).:scratch2:
had to clean fuses to get tweets to work. nice speaks.

Uh lets see...

Pioneer SX-939 $32 ( Mom has. Came with original box and man/schematics)
United Audio Dual 1019 TT $15 (still using)
Denon DVD-2900 $14 (good cleaning and is still a top notch SACD Player)
Two pairs (at the same store) of Sansui SP-70's (one was missing a woofer, dont remember how much)

And a whole slew of others stuff worth mentioning, but these are the best.

Hello all, this is my first post and I guess it's appropriate to post here seeing as my finds are pretty much what has introduced me to the world of classic audio.

So far:
Marantz 2230 - $10 - Yard Sale, needed pots cleaned.

Connoisseur BD2/A - $10 - Yard Sale, needs new belt and suspension mount.

Pioneer SX-680 - Free - Older lady was getting rid of "junk," needed pots cleaned.

Realistic Optimus 1b - Older lady was getting rid of "junk," had to reseal the cab, perfect working order, except that one woofer was replaced with a non-original, but it still sounds great.

Smaller Advents (1972) - $10 (wanted $40 but I talked them down after showing them the surrounds ;) ) - Salvation Army, needed new surrounds.

AR-4xa - Free - GFs dad was going to chuck them, cloth surrounds were torn, replaced with foam.

Technics SL-1300 - Free - GFs Dad was going to chuck, needed adjustment, had a Stanton 681EEE Cartridge/Stylus.

I'll let my mom know to not let you see her Kenwood!

What is the best deal you have ever found on a piece of audio equipment?

Akai GX-4000D reel-to-reel - found it set out for the garage 11 years ago. Haven't had to service it yet.

Harman Kardon Ten small bookshelf speakers - $10 at a thrift, sounded way better than I expected.

Or what is your favorite component you have purchased used? Was it a gift?

ESS AMT-1c speakers - $100

Have you ever bought something expecting to sell it on EBAY and kept it for yourself after listening to it?

KLH Model Twenty integrated stereo (mid/late 60's) - bought it to fix up & resell locally. After recapping the power supply I was very surprised by the sound quality. Also had a Pickering XV15 cart, and it cleaned up way better than I expected.

I Scroed this european Sanyo DCX-4000L today for 25 USD.. :)
almost new off the shelf according to the looks..

Yes, sturdy pieces of equipment..
Initially i thought the microphone volume knob was stuck , but it vas really hard to turn :) , as if no one touched it before..
Incredibly sturdy controls..
Warm and slightly fuzzy sound like the vintage pioneers..
AND.. the first reciever i have thats got a preamp and an amp section separable by jumpers :o

I've been lurking in this forum off and on for a while but signed up today and decided to post.

Here are my finds for the last 5 days.

HK A50K tube amp - $24.99. The amp was stuck in a pile at the thrift with stratocaster pick ups stuck to the amp by their magnets and the wires were hanging everywhere, it looked like a mess. I got it home and set it up and it works perfectly.

Polk Audio Monitor Series 2 M4 Speakers - $20 for the pair. These are replacing my thrift store JBL 2600s.

Nakamichi CD Player 4 - $10. Nice 90s single disc player. I'm thinking about adding a tube to it.

Sanyo TP 1030 Turntable - $14.99. It has a Shure M104E Cartridge and a N-92F needle. It's in very clean shape and even has the lid which has a minimum of scratches.

I wasn't really looking but then I found the amp and got a bug to build a second system.

A pair of ADS L1290 speakers like new, the guy wanted $50. for the pair, I thought it was too much so he took $35!

They have been my main speakers for 3 years now.

I was catching up on this thread and this post rung a bell. It was about three years ago that I ran into a pair od ADS L1230's for a $100 at a yard sale. I offered $50 and we settled on $65. They came with the original boxes and are also my main speakers.
