Goodwill/SA/Thrift Store Discussions & Finds

Jbl l100

Stopped by Salvation Army on my way to lunch, and saw only modern cheapo stuff on the audio shelf. Was about to leave when I checked the entrance to the back room (where things were being prepped before being put on the floor), there was an old looking pair of wooden speakers. No badges on the bad shaped foam grill, but I recognized those walnut frames. The pair of L100 was listed at $19.50 for the pair. But everything in the store was 50% off that day, and no tax - $9.75 out the door. Drivers in great shape, no dents in dustcaps, a couple of dinged corners in cabinets and just light scratches and nicks.

Not many finds this year. Seems Goodwill has gotten into researching vintage electronics around here. But a crazy good find that sticks out for me was a Wurlitzer 200 Electric Piano for 49.99.

Visiting my daughter in Nicholasville KY. Celebrating my grandsons 1st birthday. After the party visited the local Goodwill's. At one found a pair of Polk Audio speaker 5 for $12.50. After spending time researching on the net, found out they are monitor 5,s with the Peerless tweeters. Can't wait to get home tomorrow so I can try them out!

just picked up a pair of original advents(bullnose cabs , not utility) for $5. Someone tried to replace the surrounds, but the glue on the cone didn't stick very well. reglued them with some "tacky glue"($1.39) and they seem to be holding:banana:

my latest thriftstore find

I was at a goodwill this week looking for an old piece of furniture to convert into a tv stand for a new flat screen TV my wife and I are getting for the house for christmas this year.

I found the following blaupunkt 50's radio/turntable/bar console:

blaupunkt2.jpg

It was missing the radio/tuner, but the turntable and all 6 speakers were intact. I carefully removed the turntable and packed it up in case I wanted to restore the unit, and for the time being, put an old technics receiver, tuner, a dvd player, and our cable box in it.

The best part is that when I hooked up the speakers to my receiver, they not only worked, but sounded AMAZING.

Right now the digital cable and dvd player runs through the technics receiver (hand me down from my dad), and the speakers that came in the console I got at goodwill for $30.

Anyone know what model this thing is? The closest I can find online is the blaupunkt florida, but they're not quite the same.

"Tossed Treasures"

I`ve only been on here for a few months and I have to say I`ve found some interesting gems myself. I put together a small (haha!) system for my bedroom. I had a Yamaha CR 800 receiver given to me. I`ve hooked up a Magnavox CDB 480 to it as well as a Nakamichi CR 1A. The speakers are Minimus 7`s in conjuction with a pair of Mission 73 ps passive subs. The subs cost me $20, the tape deck $20 as well. I got the CD player for $10. More sound than my apartment can handle! Say what you might but those Minimus 7`s work well! All Goodwill finds! All of it looks like it just came out of the box! Friends are amazed at the sound compared to some of their newer stuff. I do think I have to put the subs on spikes though. Made all my own cables. I believe unless you shell out big bucks, you are not going to get this kind of quality gear anymore. So people, keep tossing this stuff second hand store way.:thmbsp:

found my technics sa303 in the dirt
Got my Technics rs630 from goodwill - $10
Realistic Solo-4 from goodwill - $4
EV MS-802 Monitor Speakers and Event 20/20 bought from a friend for $20
The POS - two matching but random boxes someone cut and put some audiovox 6.5 car speakers in (Actually they don't sound to bad, my brother says they "bump", lol)
My brother found them and bought em for me to put in my old car because I had blown the stock ones, so free!

So I have 34 bucks into my whole setup!

I totally agree, hooked them up last night, great improvement over the $15 pair of Fisher ST 410's

I stopped in at the VCR museum today, and scored this Marantz 1180DC, in the orginal box with owners manual $10.00. And a pair of Infinity RS4000, needing refoamed, another $10.00. Then on my way back out to my truck, $6.00 blew across the parking lot to me. I got the Marantz home hooked it up, turned it on, the reley clicked, but no sound. Looks like another project, for this winter.

Sony, the stepfather of Marantz! way to go! my top find at GW; am pair of Celestion 66 Studio Monitors, (the same model used at Abbey Road Studios for about 15 years) rough cabinets and one mismatched tweeter for $5.00. Sounded awesome even with the crappy mismatched tweet. great detail, dynamics, imaging a huge deep soundstage.
Seconded great buy; an ugly SAE Receiver that sound like it had triple the power (and it was not supposed to be one of their better issues) that totally blew away my NAD integrated and a Sansui G series receiver

The Marantz/Sony connection.
