Goofy hobbies

First off, most non-audiophiles consider audio a goofy hobby and if I weren't into it, I probably would too.

Otherwise, I consider myself a peculiar person. I just am, trust me. One of my hobbies that gets strange looks from people is custom ring tones. My phone came with a music player on it. The old one did too. On both phones, I downloaded some free apps which include a music downloading app, song editor, cover art finder and ring tone maker. Yeah, it takes all that to get everything just right. With the ring tone maker, I can take any song I download and make a ring tone, notification or alarm of any part of the song I want. If I get a text message, I hear "hello", from the Cars song Hello Again. If I get an email, I hear "Get the message" from the Vanessa Williams tune Running Back to You. My default ring tone is a clip from Who Can it Be Now by Men At Work. I have set custom ring tones for most of the people who call me often. It might be a song the person likes, a song that reminds me of the person or something about how one does things. My landlord for instance only accepts cash for the rent (yes, he gives me a receipt) and he has a bunch of old vehicles. So, his ring tone is Living in the Past by Jethro Tull. When someone calls, emails or texts me, people around me look at me funny and often laugh. One night at Bible study, an unknown caller (wrong number) called. The pastor was sitting right next to me as the phone went, "Who can it be now..." the pastor laughed pretty hard at that.

What are your goofy hobbies?

I collect colored glass. Various types and shapes. Find them at the flea.
Also decorative duck decoys. I do not hunt. I just admire the beauty and talents you need to be able to carve them. You need to be able to work with various tools, know how to paint, whether in oils or acrylics. And you need to know bird anatomy.

I will never be accused of ring toning!

Among some other, more mundane oddities, I collect western belt buckles, and Dr. Marten's shoes in my size.

I used to raise and breed tropical fish (cichlids). I had about 15 tanks at one time. Each one of my kids had a tank in their room. Ended up being more work than fun and I eventually gave it up.

I also collected humorous postcards like jackalopes and the world's biggest potato. I have an M.F.A. degree so there's drawings, paintings and sculptures all over the place. I have a pretty good collection of music related books. I think that's it.

Bob, I too raised tropical fish. I owned a plecostamus . The thing lived 17 years. Last years' weeklong power failure finally may have been the last straw, even though I transported him (her?) to work for heat. Died 2 weeks later.
I always liked Firemouths. Once early on I put a Jack Dempsey into a tank with cardinal tetras. Lol, that reduced the fish count in there.
Paintings? My walls are covered. I could do it twice over if I had the room.
G scale trains.

I try to collect ammo, but I'm not good at it.. I usually shoot it up about as fast as I can buy it...

Pig growin' has been my latest hobby.. Soon I'll be combining that with my ammo hobby.....

Bacon and sausage makin will then be my next new hobbies I'll be practicing.. I even took up the Smoke House building hobby...

I like my new smoke house, but I plan to build a better one... Just because now I like that hobby.. :D

I would wager that many people that are NOT into your particular would think it odd or a waste of time that YOU are so interested in it.

For years, I was into Amateur Radio. I still am, in part, but not like I used to be when I designed and built my own rigs. I remember one time a plumber was in my basement doing something and saw my wall of QSL cards from all over the world and my banks and banks of Ham Radios. He shook his head and said, "Well, I guess there is a hobby for anyone, no matter how odd." Yes, that was insulting, but to him, it was an odd hobby. Amateur Radio is my longest running Hobby, started when I was 8 years old. HiFi audio gear started when I was in my teens.

I happen to be in to Endurance Sports as a hobby. I train and compete in Triathlons, Marathons, Swimming and Bike races. It takes a lot of time and the equipment (especially high-end time trial bicycles) is very expensive. To me, it's a lifestyle choice and a hobby. To others, it's not just goofy, but downright ridiculous that I get at 7 AM on a Saturday for a 50 mile bike ride, followed by a 3 mile run.

On the other hand, something like "Quilting" is about as interesting to me as watching garbage cans rust, yet to my Aunt, well, she lives her life going to Quilt shows. I understand the passion. It's her choice. Just not for me.

Talking to the crows. Yes, I'm serious. Even had one land on my arm one time. Yes, I have a witness. Long story but I got his attention while sitting in a tree at 5:30am talking to the crows.

He escaped his owner the day before.

Collecting:

Old TVs (a few)
TV point of sale signs (especially lit/animated) and banners;
TV station memorabilia (glass dishes, similar items) especially related to color TV;
Magazine adverts for TVs, especially early color;
Postcards for motels/hotels that have something unusual about TVs, especially if
1) shows an interior shot with a TV running
2) indicates some transition in the TV industry, like "color TV in lounge" or "cable TV - 10 channels" or "color TV in all rooms"

1964-65 New York World's Fair paper and a few souvenir objects.

Not too much time anymore with a house remodel and pastures to get ready.

However, I do collect beer and beer glasses and the various breweriana that goes with it. I also collect kitchen knives and like to smoke stuff in the smoker.
