Goofy hobbies

Thought this would be fun so, I hafta ask, why did you get out of the hobby?

I enjoy detecting too, but you really have to have a lot of patience, and you really have to enjoy digging in the dirt.. It's an easy hobby to get into and easy to fall out of, and keep going back and forth..

I used to raise and breed tropical fish (cichlids). I had about 15 tanks at one time. Each one of my kids had a tank in their room. Ended up being more work than fun and I eventually gave it up.

Must be a thing with people named Bob :D. I did that as well from my early teens to my mid-20s. I bred Central and South American cichlids, and sold quite a few to the local mom and pop shops. Eventually, it got to be too much work, and one day I just up and sold my breeding pairs and quit.

That's why I like my pig hobby.. at least I can eat them when I get tired of them :yum:

I collect vintage appliances. Not just small ones, but large ones as well. I have 3 refrigerators, 3 stoves, 2 dishwashers, 1 chest freezer, 7 clothes dryers, and 9 washing machines all from the 1920's to the 1970's.

I had some big fish, by aquarium standards anyway. For the most part, the ones I was breeding got to be the size of a large crappie or other pan fish. I had more than a few people tell me "that one would make a nice sandwich" :D

My main hobby is getting rid of all the stuff I have collected over the last 35 or so years......

... Although I enjoy my collections and hobbies and they haven't become an immediate burden on my life, It is time to thin the herd. The writing is on the wall that I may run into attachment problems down the road. I'm dwindling my collections down to self contained shelves or wall units that can display the best of the best I have collected. Anything stored away is getting Sold or donated.

Used to collect some audio magazines before the internet, Porsche racing posters and manuals, a few Porsche cars, LS3/5a speakers, JBL and now IMF speakers (see below), and generally anything my ADHD and OCD self finds interesting for the moment.

Also used to do a lot of scale model slot car racing as a teen, still love it but no tracks nearby, and not many like to build true scale replica stuff to race (MESAC member). I do like to bike, play tennis, occasionally golf, and drive Porsches, at least when they're running.

My next hobby is trying to unload all the stuff I've gone apeshit over the past 30 years. Its a hunter-gatherer sort of thing that needs to turn into a small/large pile of money someday, lest it end up as an estate sale.

Hey, Bob- Which fish were you breeding? I was partial to the CA panfish also, like Synspilum, Argentea and Regani. Beautiful fish. I've actually been thinking about setting up one tank with a single show fish.

Making knives, a well made knife will last several lifetimes. An appreciation for weapons-everything from ''weapons of opportunity'' improvised, or very fine custom stuff-I was pretty active in what is now called MMA , before it became popular or strangled with a ton of rules and regulations. cheap, odd, old, weird or just different cars ,trucks, vans, ect-if you never heard of it or haven't seen one in forty years.....I'm probably driving it daily.

I started out breeding Citrinellum, then on to Labiatum, Managuensis, and Festae as well. On the South American end, my favorites were the Nemotopus, little aggressive buggers. They undergo the most drastic color change I've ever seen when it comes spawning time. I've been thinking about getting back into the hobby myself, but with just one aquarium and one fish this time around like yourself. I really loved the Citrinellum, and may go that route again. Very beautiful and very intelligent.

I had a beautiful piebald Midas that I sold and I regret it ever since. Truly a majestic fish. Tough, smart and very interactive. I think you convinced me to try one again. I used to put plastic toys in the tank and he would play with them.

I had Nemotopus once. They were in a tank with some full grown Synspilum and they were like Stukas attacking B17s in WWII. I had to get rid of them. The 12" Synspilum were cowering in the corners of the aquarium.

I kept mine separate from the others as well. I had 3 pairs in a 55 and they did good with each other. I never tried to house anything else with them because I knew it would be trouble.

I could not do that -I get too attached to my pets. And it eat a pet is "SICK".

That's where you have to not to let them become pets, and keep the mentality of them being livestock..

My wife won't even try to pet any because she said she doesn't want to get attached..

Those that have the mentality to be able to raise livestock for food, live in the country.. Those that don't, shop at the grocery store..
