Gotta love the dump!

Just a thought.

I've read through pages of commentary on the Large Advents, both good and bad. People seem to swear they're part of the second coming, or they are pushed aside as a house brand wannabe; something we were too drunk to appreciate in college, but could afford.

Mine were a dump find, made in late '76. Perhaps the victim of a realization those days weren't as good as we thought? As with being trashed in college, the dump isn't without consequence. There are a few large gouges through the veneer, through the particle board as well. Filthy, with the stains of late night beer and too early morning coffee. Character. Hey, they're Advents after all.

So, now they have new surrounds. Next will be the caps. Opened them up last night for the first time since the work. So are they just a hazy memory glorified by the benefit of revisionist history? Or did no less than Jesus himself lay hands on the fried egg tweeter?

After listening to a live Stan Getz recording from 1964 on the big Sansui SR-838 TT and Akai AM-2450 amp all I can say about the Advents is ... I get it.

There's nothing wrong with character. My Original Large Advents are battered and gouged, the veneer is chipped, and the grill cloth stained. They once hung on the wall of a college radio station, and they show it... lots of character!

That's real character. If they could talk. On second thought, probably best not to know.

I'm likely to leave them alone. They're mechanically fine, and I'm not as into perfection with looks as I used to be.

Dumps are WONDROUS places.. Lots of stuff to rummage thru, treasures to bring home, Schitt to break if you feel so moved, & maybe a Rat or 2 to dispatch w/Yr Trusty .22 rifle, if you're lucky enuff to live where you can still do that. Big Fun !

Please tell me you take a packed lunch with you for the whole day .

Good deal on the dumps, bring the kids, they'll think different about their Dad when they mature. My kids cringe every time we're together and I remark,"Hey, look at that dumpster".:D Keep bombing them with the audio interest, though, that seemed to pay off for everyone involved, big-time.

That fried egg tweeter wasn't for me, much to shrill. Still, a well engineered speaker and most of it is alright. If I was going to do a crossover upgrade, I'd pry off the old ones, bag them for future use/sale, and build new ones on a different board. The switch isn't necessary. More information can be mined at Classicspeakers.

westwind - We go regularly. Scored a parts mountain bike, built a new one for my step son. We also take the lawn trash there, the kids help with that. So they get to pick with me occasionally. My youngest was fascinated with the turntable, she was looking through liner notes the other evening. Huh, just a cycle!

I can totally understand the tweeter issue. But for me, there are certain recordings that sound amazing on these. There's a all around fullness there that I like. But then there is some music that these just don't do justice too, and it's usually in the upper reaches where they fail.
