Grado Black2 p-mount - taking the plunge.

Stop. I bought a new Grado2 based upon what I had read on here. My hope was it was better than the others I had. THAT is why I bought it. I certainly didn't blow $75 just for grins and giggles. And I didn't 'modify' anything either. Sheesh!!

Impossible cant get such a massive compliance miss match to work well it is always going to sound muddy (high compliance high effective mass typical symptoms). Like I said from the start there are options to make it work better but you have not even asked what they are and some of us have hinted there are solutions but you seem uninterested so myself and others have not gone further to help as clearly you dont want that help.

I'm trying except a few people don't seem to grasp the logic of what A p-mount is for. I took a chance based upon other's reviews, and didn't like it. It doesn't make me Charles Manson.

I use Grado on two tables at this time. Like them or would not.

One of the tables is a JVC QL-55F works sounds great. Use a scale for setting weight and table has damping adjustments that may help.

LOVE my JVC QL-Y55f's (I have two of them actually!). I didn't care for the Grado on that either.

Yes the JVC is a very nice table.
What cart do you run on yours BTW.

I checked the weight adjustment on mine only to find it was off so set using a digital scale.

I found that my Jelco arm weight adjustment was off some time ago. Now use either my old trusty Shure or a digital scale. It does make a difference!

I spent some time pulling the knob trying to zero it in better. Gave up could never get it set just right.

No it is not, how many times! P MOUNT SHOULD BE HIGH COMPLIANCE P MOUNT SHOULD BE ON AN ARM LESS THAN 10g EFFECTIVE MASS. Grado are high compliance some P mount are not Grado in this respect are correct not wrong. Your arm is 22g!!!!! It is not correct for any P mount that is within P mount spec. Some P mounts worked with heavier arms but Grado compliance was always high and always P mount compatible.
Man it is like pulling teeth!!!

I have about 50 carts from a bunch of 2k MC's, Decca Super Gold, bunch of MI, MM right down to a AT3600l which is under 20 bucks. No cart should sound muddy or as bad as the OP described unless there is something big time wrong with setup of a huge compliance mismatch or a big stylus or cart fault. I only really ever heard one cart that made me wince and run for the volume knob that was the ear bleeding 2M red, not sure how highs can be that sharp and fun for anyone. Apart that cart there are carts I like over others but every cart I have owned sounds reasonable if all else is right in the set up ie decent amp turntable arm and speakers with good compliance match. Like I said I still have fav carts like the Decca super Gold and love the Grado too high end ones like my Statement Reference are of course the best ones but even my blue 2 sounds lovely. There are really very few really bad carts, and if something really is THAT bad and stylus seems fine then normally something is very wrong with something.

For what it's worth, I really like my Grado pmount. It's on a Technics SL-QD33 so not really sure if the compliance is a good match, but it is a "pure" pmount turntable, no adapter :biggrin:

Compliance of your arm effective mass is 7.5g which is less than half what the OP's turntable is. Yours is dedicated P mount which is why Grado compliance is correct for it.

Actually joking aside, the 2m cart itself is probably not a bad cart, it will never make my top 10 but the improvement that the blue is over the red points to the red having quite a poor stylus as the rest is the same so the sibilant high issues are for sure just stylus tip quality.

A lot of people must upgrade from a manufacturer-supplied red at LP Gear. They sell the ones they've pulled for $75 which is why I own one: heavy discount, new cart :D

I found it sounded way too bright new through a new Onkyo amp and new Q 3020i speakers... but moving it into a different room with 15 year old Polk speakers and a 10 year old Yamaha amp tamed down that brashness. I think you need something warmer, older gentler... uh... dead-er (?) and then it's not so harsh but simply "full range" ;)

Maybe, my ATC scm 100's are very detailed and neutral so if a cart is harsh sound is harsh. I did not keep the 2m red, really hated the sibiance, which us a shame as I have a microscope now and I would have liked to examine the stylus to see what issue was.
