Wait...lead guitar or rhythm guitar? A lot of good lead guitarists couldn't play decent rhythm guitar if their life depended upon it.

Sure, these threads are like voting for Homecoming Queen. But sometimes you mention somebody that someone else isn't familiar with and that leads them to more great music. Probably the best guitarists I have ever SEEN on stage are Doc Watson, Muddy Waters, Robert Fripp, Robin Trower, Tony Rice and Steve Howe. I think these guys are a notch above the likes of Jimmy Page and Eddie Van Halen who I have also had the pleasure of seeing in person. We should also throw The Edge of U2 into the mix.

Think of the top 100 guitar solos in rock history. How many times would Jimmy Page be listed? He is definately not the most technically proficient or precise player but he knows what works.

KR is an excellent rhythm player. He was content letting Brian Jones, Mick Taylor and Ron Wood take the lead.

I repeat: this isn't about the best guitar player, because there are many who are better. I agree with the posters who have pointed out those like Van Halen, Alvin Lee, Robin Trower, Jimmie Page, EC and others, because those are great guitar players and have provided astonishing moments and careers. But (I think) Kieth Richards is the iconic rock guitarist of all time.

I'll try to explain it this way: You could get valid opinions on whether Joe Louis, Archie Moore, Sugar Ray Robinson or others were the best boxer ever, but the consensus greatest, either in spite or because of his many technical flaws, was Ali.
