Greatest Rock Guitarist

For sheer virtuosity:

60s era Clapton and Hendrix are pretty close.
But, if you want a guitarist with a real feel for the blues, you have to go with a real blues guitarist who could also play rock and roll.

ALBERT KING

Yup, Albert King was great. And you can hear Clapton cop solos, often note-for-note, off Freddie King. But I'd consider them blues rather than rock, wouldn't you?

How about Stevie Ray Vaughn, Ry Cooder and Leo Kottke for virtuosity?

guitar? it's all done with computers now.

What planet are you living on??? No its not....................!:guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar::guitar:

The greatest guitarist in history is my friend **** *******.

He could only play one song. Stairway to Heaven. He would run his fingers through his impossibly perfect feathered blond mane. Then pick up his cheap guitar. Someone would dim the basement lights as it became quite. **** would then begin to strum with a fake intensity the young douchebags of today only dream of.

The girls with equally perfect feathered hair would instantly become hypnotized. Their cheeks would flush. They would take a sip of beer stolen from some dad's garage. Eyelids fluttered. Angora sweaters rising and falling enticingly. Rising and falling. Rising and falling. FINALLY we are gonna get lucky we would think. Each of us stealthily pairing up with the girl we liked. No sudden movements!

Then without fail about halfway through ****'s 75 minute rendition one girl would stand up. Angry hands on angry hips.

"WHAT! You FAGS are out of beer?!?!?!?!? We are out of here!" She would stomp. "We really need fake I.D.s..." one of us would lament for the 100th time to the sound of a fading burnout.

And that's how we got really really good at Foosball. Thanks ****! Couldn't have been Freshman Foosball champ of Gullick Hall without that table in your old basement bro!

You did specify "rock" so that means Robert Johnson and Leo Kottke are disqualified.
I do listen to and enjoy both of these guys.

To answer your question, Zappa.

Sorry to be a party pooper, but Jeff Beck is not a song writer, hes a collaborator, and most of his stuff since Bogart Beck Appice is instrumental.
He is a musical gymnast, one of the best to fuse Rock and Jazz............

New guy throwing in...

George Harrison.

Songs wouldn't be even close to the same without em.
No extra notes, no missing notes.
Perfect fills, perfect solo's, perfect rythym, just plain perfect.
Try to imagine a Beatles song without his contribution.
