I've noticed an uptick in general frustration and anger lately and others seem to be experiencing this as well, as if there's something in the air. In my case it's completely unrelated to politics or social issues- It's really difficult to figure out but I'm ready to explode at the smallest of things. It's actually concerning me. Is this something you have been experiencing yourself?

I'm finding that big time in my little Canadian city. We are no longer the friendly and polite folk that people chuckle about. I think a big part of it is the political landscape and the crazy cost of living. We live in a world where lots of people have adopted the mantra "All for one, and I'm the one"

Only in cybersocial venues that cater to or traffic in politics, not so much in my limited personal contacts.
Some folks allow themselves to be susceptible to being manipulated toward umbrage at the hot button issue(s) du jour that likely don't affect them or they can't control in reality.

Regarding social issues and politics, I find myself completely disinterested and detached emotionally. It's not that I don't have opinions—some things strike me as absurd or foolish—it's just that they don't evoke a strong emotional response in me. In fact, I often find the entire spectacle somewhat amusing, viewing life as a form of theater.

Internally, I'd admit I'm quite an angry person, a sentiment largely rooted in my upbringing and childhood experiences. While some people manage to move past such hurdles, it appears I'm among those who struggle to do so. I'm fairly adept at maintaining my composure and concealing my anger, largely because I prefer solitude.

However, in recent months, I've observed a shift in my emotional state. I've become particularly prone to anger, to the extent that I've begun to question my own judgment about how I react to things. Minor incidents now trigger disproportionate reactions from me. There's been quite a few times I've read that others are experiencing something similar lately.

I don't know you or your situation, bear with me.
Do you think holding oneself accountable for what isn't ones fault or responsibility may account for at least some of it, and consciously taking oneself off the hook for what wasn't and isn't on them is useful?
Along similar lines, conciously not taking personally things that are not personally directed?
Perhaps letting go of past events you can't change controlling your present life and future prospects?
Perhaps none of these thing apply to you and your situation, other reader may find some food for thought.

Everything that impacts me emotionally seems to do so on an unconscious level. I don't experience much overt anger or emotion about the bad events in my life, yet I logically conclude that these events are indeed affecting me. It's hard to articulate and really hard to personally understand.

Absolutely. I got rid of some of my social media accounts (facebook mainly) a few years ago and that's helped me personally quite a bit. It's too bad since I kept in touch with some friends that way but I found other ways to keep in touch with the ones I really want to be in touch with. Those sites promote lots of information that's provably false. They don't care about whether something is true or not, only how many likes and shares it gets. So you can't trust any info you get from them and they intentionally show you things that will make you angry because that's what gets the most engagement, keeps you on the site longest, and makes you see as many of their ads as possible. The negatives far outweigh the positives for me at least.

Everything is correlating with everything. Nothing is excluded.

I don't tend to share much that's personal on AK, but yes, I've recently become aware that I'm more prone to anger. It isn't that I get wound up about things I can't control. For me, it's things I figure should be controllable, but seem not to be - i.e., frustration. Might be a matter of misplaced expectations on my part, too - I'm at a life stage where I figured things should get easier, but many things seem to be getting harder.

Also, I don't doubt that the collective trauma of COVID is contributing to all of us being more on the edge, with the reduction of social contact probably resulting in fewer "normative" influences.

Thank goodness that AK is the closest I come to "social media", so at least I don't have some algorithm trying to wind me up!

If you haven't already seek out professional help... it works.
Damn yea! My 140 mile commute to work has got me to the point of eruption. Flicked the bird twice today. I'm usually not such an asshole,
My SO is often amazed how idiots in traffic do not phase me. They used to, then one day I said to myself, "this is something I have zero control over so do not let it bother you", I do need to remind myself of this every once in a while
Wait, 140 mi each day?
I do 115, many people I know in this area are dooing close to 100 everyday.

Don't quite know, what to enter into your poll. Because in my case it's much more of an increase in frustration, but not much of an increase in anger. Whereas in case of the general public over here in Germany, many would indeed appear to be both increasingly frustrated and increasingly angry. However, that increase wouldn't seem unrelated to politics and social issues, but rather quite the opposite (regarding both myself and the general public).

After working in a career where I dealt with disgruntled people every day, I found the patience I developed (the customer is always right) carried over into retirement. Raising 5 kids helped, too. It takes a lot to set me off.

I made a vow to myself over the past few years of increased aggressiveness and hostility to try not to engage in that behavior. If you stay positive, it can really change the climate around you. There will always be people you cannot win over. Step around them and continue on your path. I just turned 73 and I don't want to spend my remaining years popping Tums. Time to enjoy some music!

I used to wake up angry and it got worse from there. Eventually talked to my Dr. and we tried meds for depression and anxiety. Thankfully that's behind me now, I just have a little something something when anxiety kicks in...sometimes just knowing there's relief is better than using it.

As for the current climate, it's not good. All the things we can't talk about here (religion & politics) have a lot to do with it, as well as post covid trauma and shortages and price increases.

I'm more scared than angry. Lunatics are everywhere. My wife just finished Active Shooter Training at work...I want her to retire as soon as possible.
