Headphones

Cetainly not the best- but Ive listened through some really nice phones- my old "refererence" stand-bys are Koss pro 4a's. You have to look high and low but theyre around yet. Many times NOS on some guys shelf. 20-20,000 response if I remember correctly. Im sure a bunch of folks are gonna pile on me for saying this but those things are tougher than nails and have a "warm" sound to them. Just my opinion. In fact, Im sure they are still marketed by Radio Shack. Might say "Optimus" on them as well....

It would be nice to find a pair of AKG K340 that has been modified, so it can sound good with the modern music too.

What year did AKG make the very last AKG K340? Was it in the early 90's?

i find it hard to settle on a single pair of headphones..but i find the sennheiser hd595 pretty much eliminates my need to upgrade anything other than my source next...

i also happen to think the grado sr60s and sennheiser hd555 are great for the money...so i have 2 pairs of sr 60s and a pair of 555's...

for on the move the koss portapro's are hard to beat...so i have those too...

does the headphone addiction ever end ?..

i think as a minimum though eveyone should have at least a pair of well run in grado sr60's to compare with before buying anything more expensive...:scratch2:

I have found the Sennheiser HD650 to be extremely detailed, clear and unforgiving to bad source. They can reproduce at really high levels without distortion and offer a nice balanced sound.

I've also had experience with Stax electrostatic headphones although a very old model from the early '80s. They are also excellent but can't offer the same loud reproduction.

Thank you all for your helpful replys.

I would REALLY LOVE!! to get my hands on a mint pair of Sennheiser HE60's with it's own amp.

It's probably going to take me at least a year to find one of these great headphones.

Anyway for now it's just going to be the Grados and the AKG that I'm happy using.

It would seem the HE60 and amp combo go for around $2000 second hand (no longer made). They do come up for sale now and again on Head-fi.org, although usually US, 120V versions. Being a fellow Brit, you know how much the import duty on that is going to hurt!

Can't say I blame you. The thought of importing goods of that value (if I had the funds) would scare the hell out of me. On the technical front people do report success with step down transformers but I don't fancy that myself either. Good luck in your search

I have been very bad, I bought a pair of AKG K340 Headphones in very good condition.
These have no mods done, they are just in their normal form.

I find the same to be true with my HD600's. Give them something recorded well and they will positively sing. Give them garbage and you'll hear it as such. Very detailed but quite musical IMO.

I should be getting my AKG K340 Headphones soon.

This is a pic of them which the seller has kindly sent to me.

Do these Headphones have serial numbers? As I want to send it to AKG to get info on what year this version was made in.

AKG's are great. I use a K260 for music and a K2 for on my laptop. Delightful and spacious sound. I tried the K240 but it was too tight on my ears and not comfortable to wear.
A friend of mine had an MB, maybe a bit sturdier design but also heavier.

Good for you, AKG's are great:yes: Just can't wait to see how the K340 will sound! The seller said it will have more bass then the K701, and it will be less brighter.

I did use a Headphone amp only temporarily with K701, It was my Dad's Musical Fedility x-can V2. It was a match made in heaven with the K701.

I've been a longtime member of Headfi.I've never heard the AKG's but from many comments read i've always understood they are rather difficult to drive.Hence,a good headphone amp.....thats why I was asking.

I bet that was a "match made in heaven" with the MF V2--wish I could hear that combo myself ! Just a suggestion...Meier Audio designs amps geared for Senns and AKG's if interested.

I've had numerous amps in the past but now I'm down to a Little Dot MK III tube amp and a tiny powerhouse Z-Audio Lambda(sort of unknown) and I'm content..also, no more money to spend lol !

I even get plenty of enjoyment from the two pairs of $40.00 portable Sennheiser px 100's.Excellent low priced cans imo.

Throughout this discussion, I never read whether you prefer open or closed phones? Makes a big difference in "what's the best" discussion. The two listening styles and pretty different - isolation and room ambiance sneaking in.

I have an early pair of 600 ohm Beyerdynamic DT-990 Pro's.
I've had to replace the velvet ear pads once.....other than that.....they are still fine.
Despite their size.....they are soooo comfortable!
Great bass.....without being boomy!
Just a plain good all-around performer IMO.
