Headshells for SME 3009 (mki I believe)

Also, I read somewhere that the Nagaoka wants an effective mass of 12g or under. But the arm alone is 12.5g. I truly don’t understand how this works. Haha!
Here are the specs of the MP-200. Not at all a high compliance as was the old MP-20.
With 7.2 @ 100 Hz , it is around 13 @ 10 Hz.
To achieve a resonance frequency around 9-10 Hz, you should have a total effective mass of around 20-25 grams.
Your SME is fine , even with the heavy AS headshell .

I am getting different numbers:

SME tonearm effective mass (incl. headshell) 12.5g
SME headshell effective mass 6.5G
Audiosilente headshell 15.8g
Nagaoka MP200 mass 6.5g

(12.5 - 6.5) + 15.8 + 6.5 = 28.3

F = 1000/ 2 (3.1416) √ (28.3 x 7.2)
F = 11.15
Though that’s still within range. Or am I supposed to use @10hz?
 
An easy way to see the total effective mass (arm/headshell/cartridge/screws) is to use a digital scale. Remove the counterweight , place the cartridge (as it is on the tonearm) on the scale and see the (approximate) mass.
This method was recommended by ortofon years ago in one of their information booklets.
Use the stylus protector of course. When you finish , deduct the protector weight from the total.

Good to know. But if we stay in the theoretical based on the numbers given by the net, I am going to see if I can find a headshell that will both satisfy the resonance frequency issue AND the tracking force issue WITHOUT having to change the counter weight postions. The calculating begins!

Oh dear!

With a compliance of 22, the total effective mass would need to be between 9.5g (for 11Hz) and 14.2g (for 9Hz). Considering the weight of the cartridge is 7.2g and the arm without headshell is 6g, I would need a headshell of 1g! Hahaha

My set up is presently way off!
