Hey guys
I am playing with 3 Shun Mook Mpingo disks right now. Just wondered if anyone had used them before and can give me some insights as to how to set them up right and use them best. Read lots of good stuff online about them.

Well, I guess you could read about or theorize about what they might (or might not) do and I sure have a pre-conceived notion but what the hell, it's all in the listening.

Toss them in your pocket next time you come up for a listen and we'll try them, might be interesting.

Well, I gotta ask.
Did you hear or notice anything?
E

Honestly no. I'm not saying that they wouldn't/couldn't change sound but I wasn't picking up on it. The disks were not presented to have huge effects but subtle ones in regard to soundstage and imaging. To be fair, there was some other activity in the room so maybe their reported improvements were lost a little.

From people I have talked to, they say the changes are are very dependent on equipment. Apparently CDP's can show the biggest difference. Who knows?
Thats what we are here to figure out.

Sounds like fun. Will probably be easier with two guys anyhow.

If nothing else, it is a good excuse to listen to music. :)

I read there website and there is no statement based on true scientific fact but half truths....It will be interesting on what you hear. Maybe a blind test?

We'll see how it works out. Don't know how blind it can be, but it's worth a shot. I am hoping someone sees this thread and can maybe give some tips on the most effective uses for them. Other than tall coasters for shot glass, for instance... :)

I remember when mcpingo was selling stickon dots to place on walls and ceilings....At that time i bought some and placed the dots on the walls of Powel hall (St Louis Symphony) 500 people couldnt hear any improvement..I published that in Absolute Sound...Everybody got a chuckle about that.

Don't remember the stick on dots. First of their products I remember hearing about were the Mpingo discs.

What were the dots made of? What were they supposed to do?

They appeared to be plastic like....very thin. They claimed better soundstage and imaging.... Can you believe that.... Later they came out with a speaker with very thin cabinet walls claiming better ambient bass response. Great if you want the cabinet to resonate.

Actually I've heard of dots... they're supposed to do something but exactly what, I don't know.

As for your discs, I would guess that they are made of very heavy/thick wood which should cut down on resonances. Like the difference between MDF and regular wood for shelving.

When I dumped my wood shelves (a stereo stand made from 2X4's - thick wood!!) and replaced them with MDF the difference was immediately noticeable. I had no idea that the 2X4's were so.... resonance receptive? Susectable to resonance?

Anyone know how to spall susceptable?

:D
