Help Needed: Shun Mook Mpingo Discs

WELLLLLL?????? I,m waiting.... How did the listening session go.??

Well, it ain't happened yet. :)
BIll and I are still planning to get together and spin some tunes. Just scheduling hasn't worked out well. We do have to do it soon.
After that, I am thinking of perhaps getting some AK'er thoughts on these things too. But more on that later...

You can't get imaging or anything else out of a wooden puck. How silly can things get?

Have you tried those, or some similar device, in your system? I would be interested to hear about your experience with them. I haven't used the Shun Mook, but I have ebony Yamamoto PB-9's and PB-10's under my Lector, for isolation. They helped clean up and tighten LF playback. How does it work? I haven't the faintest idea. For that matter, I don't really care. I just know that they are staying put. I listen to the music.

For the record, I have $0 invested in these, so I have no psychoacoustic predisposition to finding justification for an expenditure.

Well, if you put something under your TT's feet, and it damps excess vibration, resulting in less feedback, then I would say it makes an audible difference. No magic there.

But, and I'm just "thinking out loud", there has never been any proof, unless you count common sense, that putting little wooden discs on a CDP will improve its' sound. It's just more snake oil for the gullible.

The PB-9/10 combo is a spike and cup combo that does isolate my cdp. My Lector CDP0.6T is a tube-buffered cdp. That may account for isolation having an audible effect.

Maybe not, but there it is, nonetheless.

now now outshined, didn't your parents teach you that if you can't say something nice, you shouldn't say anything at all?

Sorry... I thought you were referring to a 'table.

OK, I know some guys love their tube stuff, and that is fine. I'm really, REALLY, not putting it down.

But a cd player requires extremely linear devices to work. Tubes are anything but. If the spikes help to dampen vibration (maybe you need a sturdier shelf) and you say you can hear a difference in low frequency clarity, then it works for you.

I, for one, wouldn't use them. Even for free. I don't believe in it because it doesn't make sense to me. TO ME.

Oh. I see. You haven't used them then, because you are skeptical of their validity.

I've had my skepticism handed back to me, numerous times. These wooden feet, a power cable (budget-priced, and whipped the big-$ boys), Ag/Cu vs Cu cables. I have learned that I don't need to understand why something works, to know THAT it works. I just trust my ears. Does that make me gullible? On the contrary. I am a huge believer in empiricism. Try something and learn whether it makes any difference, for or against, for ME. Not everything I have tried is an improvement, not even half. But I'm still learning about this, at my age.

You hold on tight to your beliefs, though, and stay secure in the knowledge that you understand why your gear sounds the way it does. You're a better man than I.

I speak my mind, bro. But I know the truth hurts.
I'll let you in on a secret: your remarks don't injure me, in the slightest. I'm too old to get worked up by them. I, too, speak my mind, and then I just go back to my music.

I hope you enjoy your music, too. If you are very lucky, maybe even more than I do, though that will be difficult.

Please read the posting rules for TOL. We ask you speak from experience, not just preach about what you "know". If you have any experience with the products in question, please feel free to share it. If not, please take your comments elsewhere.
Thanks

I don't intend to injure anyone. This is, or supposed to be, a free-flowing forum. Opinions will inevitably clash.

I don't need to put my hand on a red hot stove burner to know it'll hurt. In that sense, again to ME, putting little wooden discs on a cdp or whatever will make no diff in sound whatsoever. This is what I believe. The audio industry, especially the loony bin ultra high end, is rife with all sorts of nonsensical beliefs. I, for one, will not drink the kool aid.

Will do. But I don't need a weatherman to tell me which way the wind is blowing.

This is true.

This, on the other hand, is argument by mockery - avoiding that is what TOL is about.

Just to clarify why the rules are in place in TOL....

The rules are in place to ALLOW for free-flowing discussion. Your comments were trying to make for anything but.
You state YOURS is the only correct point of view. You state that people who would try such things are "Gullible". The entire discussion is just "silly". You refer to this area of the audio hobby as"loony bin ultra high end," and that it "is rife with all sorts of nonsensical beliefs." How on earth can insulting the people who's minds are open to trying the item in discussion help to create a free flowing discussion?
The point of this thread was to discuss an audio related product. It was a request for help from people who may have tried or used it. The intention was to have open minds and actually try it. The results would then be posted for all to read. There have been positive and negative results but all have been posted. The item would be discussed.
History is rife with examples of people going against the accepted wisdom and studying ideas that seemed outlandish at the time. The world being flat. The sun circling the earth. Even more recently, the "impassable" sound barrier. Often science has had to play catch up with the outlandish opinions of many of the great thinkers and inventors of history.
No one ask that you believe in it. No one asks that you try it. But please do not insult those who are willing to keep their minds open to things you choose not to believe in.

I was at a wedding, talking to a guy who I've met before (can't really call him a friend... yet).

He not only made an improvement in the sound of his CD player but got rid of a problem using some wooden knobs (hardwood).

I know what you're thinking... you're WRONG! :D

They're small knobs and he uses them to isolate his CDP. He also bought a hardwood plank and put it on top of the CDP. It was starting to skip (a Rotel made in... 1990, I think he said...) and it 1) does not skip anymore and 2) actually sounds better.

Now why is this? Magic? Eh, don't think so....

I would guess that the wooden knobs isolated the player - or do they allow vibrations to "drain" into the shelf? And the plank- would anything heavy have done the same and had the same effect?

I dunno. But this guy is pretty happy - however it worked.

An example of keeping an open mind. And I'm going to try it, too!

Home Depot knobs too expensive for you? Try the SuperBall trick. $0.25 for a superball (from a gumball machine outside of your local grocery store), $0.19 for a holder (used for chair legs - from the Home Depot). Three of them.... about a buck.

OK, I know some guys love their tube stuff, and that is fine. I'm really, REALLY, not putting it down.

But a cd player requires extremely linear devices to work. Tubes are anything but.

Perhaps you'd like to give us your thoughts on linearity vs. feedback? Do you know of any SS amps that are linear with no NFB? Any tube amps? Do you realize that the tubes in a CDP are for a very small gain stage, akin to a phono preamp (but perhaps less difficult)? If you treat the active device (in this case a tube) properly, it'll behave in a linear fashion.

I'll just throw in my 2 cents. :)

I prefer SS for various reasons, but tubes can work quite well too. The individual implementation is more important than the type of active devices used.

In other words, a good tube amp is better than a lousy SS amp, and vice versa. The quality depends upon the person who designed it.

I totally agree! There's more to it than the simplistic and inaccurate statement that tubes aren't linear. Implementation is the most important factor.

Sorry if I'm getting back to the topic with this comment... ;)

Are the Shun Mook Mpingo Discs supposed to provide isolation or are they touted as a coupler?

Isolation prevents vibrations from entering your listening chain (allowing your components to "float") while coupling allows vibrations to 'drain' out of your component.

I'm not sure of the correct wording with my "float" and 'drain' comments but I tried. :D

Example. A Symposium platform isolates a turntable from your stereo stand. Prevents vibrations from entering the TT (them darn kids with the loud music!) However, the feet of the turntable will not allow all of the vibration to drain to the platform so you have to use the provided couplers to support the turntable (so the feet does not touch the platform - the TT is supported entirely by the couplers).

Does it say?

I'm currently using some maple wooden door knobs bought from a hardware store and I notice a sound difference...
