HELP Unique situation with Technics SL7 (video included)

So, please watch this video, I need help desperately. I messed up so bad. And I just got this turntable.

The guy who sold it to me was trying to convince me NOT to put the mounting screw back in. Now I understand why.

But after a thread here a couple members convinced me it helps the cartridge track better. And so I was convicted to place it in after work and THIS happened.

Am I completely screwed or is there a way out of this? I detail exactly how this happened in the video.

Have you tried to contact the seller? He might have a way around the problem.

I am not familiar with this turntable. I could offer suggestions, but they would be total WAGs and may make things worse.

I left a voicemail with him. Man the position of that tone arm and the uniqueness of this situation both kind of suck. But I am leaving it as it is till I find a fix. I can't believe I did this. I shouldn't have done something while fatigued after work.

Anyway, hoping someone familiar with linear tracking Technics tables chimes in soon. I have a feeling there is something very simple I can do that I am overlooking.

You should be able to turn the worm gear by hand.

And yes, the screw was installed from the wrong side. Manuals are available on Vinyl Engine.

I think that the protective cover may be jamming the cartridge in place. Maybe if you remove both the cover and the stylus assembly.

So there was one screw I removed. I will see if I can figure out from that image you showed what to do. But is the worm Gear the screw on the lower left hand corner of the arm assembly? Or is it a long mechanism? It is difficult to tell from that drawing in the manual what the hand is turning.

The hand is turning the cartridge screw - nothing at all to do with the worm gear. It was to illustrate the proper attachment method.

What you nee to do is look at the left hand side, see the big plastic gear wheel? See the worm drive? Left of that, you can see a brass pulley connected to the motor. Move that with your finger until the sled mechanism moves inward. It will sort itself out re alignment etc.

That makes sense. Why would it be left side for my S-J2 and right side for the SL7 but this guy swore that it was meant to go in the right side.

Now I need to figure out the wormgear when I get home from work.

Do I need a tool to turn it, or can I turn it by hand?

Sorry, new at disassembling and working on vintage linear trackers. And not mechanically inclined. But I believe with your help, I can definitely do it this weekend.

By the way the tone arms on these are meant to have some left/right play ?

So it being slightly pushed over by the mounting screw till I have time to figure it out won't be much of a issue to cause damage? I will make a video. Illustrating what I am saying soon.

On most arms the screw does insert from the right. This one doesn't for obvious reasons. The screw will insert from the opposite side of the female thread and there's a recess for the head. Their screw would also be shouldered. I read of the parts tell how it has to go together - one only one way.

Pic looks right. You'll have to try - just don't force anything. The service manual mentions moving the arm by manually turning the worm gear so perhaps read that.

Now to identify the worm gear. Is it that white round clock gear looking thing I showed in the picture in my previous post?

The cylindrical nylon gear is a worm gear. I don't know if it's THE worm gear, in question.

Does it get turned by hand or with a tool? Ca I just pull the Pulley cable?

Okay, take this advice carefully! Have the unit positioned so you can see both sides of the table. Chassis side and the tonearm side. Now slowly and in very small increments, rotate that big round teflon gear counterclockwise AND see where the tonearm is going. Now, rotate it it clockwise, view the results.

You want to turn it so that the tension is relieved on the tonearm. Just enough to remove the screw --- and no more.

Good luck!

Just playing with my LT J33 today. Remove the plastic cover of the “works”, spin the brass wheel to move the sprocket/gear and cartridge holder. As noted, the screw is on the left side of the cartridge body. Here’s the J33, for reference, it it helps:
