Help with Advents

I’ve only have the OLA and “the Smaller Advent” so someone enlighten me. Madnuss’s woofers are different from Newbie01812’s. Why? Are there different NLA’s. Madnuss’s look like I’d expect.

Are you referring to kmagnuss?
There are different woofers for OLA's and NLA's

the OP's woofers look like replacements maybe,....or reconed with....?

coating?

Yep I forgot the "K" so we are wondering why Newbie's don't sound right - well..... this may be why. Woofers replaced with what? Reconed with what?

You have a good eye, I didn't notice it at first. But with a closer look I see frames that are painted black, not bare metal, the dust cap is different, and the voice coil leads are not visible. Also, I note that the woofers appear to be held in with Torx or Allen screws, not the original Phillips, but the OP could have changed those.

Newbie01812 I realize you want to surprise dad but he may be the only one who might remember how when why the woofers were changed in some way.

Post #5 didn't look right to me but since I don't have NLA's I figured I'd wait to see how this played out but since after 4 pages it hadn't, I suspected there must be a missing piece to this puzzle hence I asked for more pics.

Kinda eagle eyed, I did repaint the frames because they were looking a little tired, and replaced the original screws with t nuts and torx screws as the simple screw into wood was feeling a little loose and stripped in a couple of places. Foams are from Simply Speakers. Here is the speaker frame pre refurbishment…

Original Advent woofers should have only six "anti-break up" ridges on the cone surface. The OP's woofer appears to have eight.

I feel like my earlier message got lost in the mix but I was saying earlier that I really think the speakers are sounding quite a bit better now. I actually think the foam just needed to break in a little.

Do write this earlier but a lot of messages and conversations seem to have burried it a little.

Going to carry on playing them more any will report back in a few days. I would say the bass presence is about 60% better than it was day one after finishing the refurb

I did see your post above-

I’m glad you are mostly happy with what you have now. However for future readers of this thread it appears you have mystery woofers or at least a mystery cone and possibly even a different voice-coil installed in the original baskets which could be the root of why they "might not" be up to par sound wise for NLA's.

I’ll report back but I don’t think they are ‘mystery’. My guess is they have been re-coned at some point possibly. They definitely are Advents, at least the baskets and magnet are. Once I can surprise my Dad with the units I’ll ask for the history as he bought these new in the 70’s so he will know everything about them.

Ok so BIG update.

First the speakers now sound fantastic, and there was no real magic to it…it really came down to just letting the foams settle and break in.

When chatting with Simply Speakers they said they shouldn’t need to break in…but they really did. After about 10 hours of playing, the difference wasn’t just noticeable, it was night and day different. The sound had gone from being thin and lacking in bass to a beautiful full, warm, and bouncing note.

I hugely appreciate all the guidance, support, and assistance from everyone here…..annoyingly it could have been avoided is SS had just said, ‘give them a few hours to break in’ regarding the foams.

As for the ‘mystery woofers’. I have now given the speakers to my Dad, (he is over the moon btw!) so I was able to ask him about the history…..so, the woofers are originals, but one got damaged in a house move back in the mid 80’s so my Dad’s friend, Bill, who had actually worked for Advent re-coned them for him. Although they look slightly different, they were made by the same manufacturer and were direct replacements used by Advent in repairs at that time. My Dads pal re-coned both just to ensure there were no minor differences between the original 10 years old cone.

Hopefully that puts this ‘issue’ to bed, and again…thanks to everyone for your support.

I have essentially fallen in love with the speakers and am currently awaiting a pair of my own I just won on auction!! I am thinking I may try the BSC as proposed by @Pete B so the adventure continues!!
