Look, until you take it upon yourself to apply a little effort and learn about the signal flow in an audio system, you'll never be satisfied with any answer. After all, since you want to keep it to "just the facts", you need to be open to learning new ones yourself in order to understand the answers your questions.
As you can see, anyone can take one solitary line-level source, plug it into an eq, and then plug that eq into an aux input and make that one source work. But, to do it to alll non-digital sources connected to your receiver, you need that "tape monitor loop" that we, and Yamaha, keep on referring to.
