Hehe, yesterday, when I saw this, I was going to write a post that said, "Wait 'til Manfred/lini sees this. He will tell you what it is" but I decided against it. And, lo and behold today - VOILA!

:D

Oh, I'd guess Walt might have also known it - and/or the pretty similar looking YM-127. And maybe his memory still is better than mine, 'cause I have to confess that in case of all these often very similar looking Japan carts with quite a few OEM versions I'm really bad with all those model designations, so I usually have to do a little search to make sure I've got the correct one in mind...

Knew it too? Nope. It's in my photo archive, yes, but I've been wanting to get familiar with a version of this cart/stylus for a long time, namely the Concord CIM-50 or 60, which uses a very similar but not identical body (stylus looks very different, like the YM-127's) and is a tripole design that's different from the ones we know in the US (and Italy) as Acutex.

(The Sony VL-100G and its twin Piezo YM-309 are two others I'm trying to get, so as to be able to show off to my tripole friends.)

Are the YM-121 and 127 tripoles too? Dunno. [UPDATE: They're not.] They're among the Azden/Piezos or variants that refuse to drop into my lap. Clearly-identified photos of the YM-127 body are elusive, though there are some likely candidates that don't have a body magnet like the Concord's.

A walk-around of the 121 stylus can be seen on turntableneedles.com (abbrv'd as TTN around here) as the 7993-black-- at least you can see where that big black pin or horn or dowel goes. That would be an ideal place for an inducing magnet, but is it? Maybe the OP can tell us.

Walt: Afaik, those two Concords were somewhat odd-looking IM-MI variants of the YM-127.

So the Piezo YM-127 was a standard moving magnet job, while the Concord was the IM tripole with a body magnet? No Piezo or Azden-branded tripole, as far as you know?

Tripole? Is that anything like the old Decca MI with the 3 output pins?
No, it refers to a design with a unique method of crosstalk cancellation in an IM design, popularized and marketed in the US primarily by a long-gone company called Acutex, but the cartridges were made by Azden/Piezo in Japan. Similar to an old patent by Audio-Technica, it looks like a V-magnet design but with little permalloy pingpong paddles instead of little rod magnets. The cantilever has a permalloy sleeve as well, giving three moving-iron elements.
Lots of Acutex threads here, but start with this one: http://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/piezo-azden-acutex-thread.604161/

So, it's a good or a bad cartridge (japanese=good)? and why it have a "nose"?
Probably good, certainly Japanese, but I only see conical styli for it. If you have a piece of iron or steel handy, you can check the "nose" for magnetism, but my guess is that it's there simply to locate and fix the stylus in position.

Thanks!!! really helpful information!!

Okay, is anyone eager for another round of "guess this cartridge?" I either know the cartridge or the stylus based on some identifying text on the bottom. Thanks in advance for any help. The info:

-- Denon DP-23F TT
-- Clearly a Denon headshell
-- Cart is black on top, gray on bottom
-- White text on bottom says “signet 3Ea”
-- I do know that Signet was Audio Technica's upscale line

Basically need to know what kind of cart and stylus I have. Is the cart the Signet? Or is the stylus the Signet? Everything sounds decent, but I don't know how many hours are on the stylus so I'm planning ahead. Any info will be greatly appreciated. (Need to click on the thumbs, not the links, to see the larger images.) Thanks.

sc: Body looks more like a TK1Ea, upgraded witha TKN3Ea - 'cause a TK3Ea body would sport a silver instead of black mounting frame.

Walt: Sorry, I don't know any further details.

Greetings to you from the state of Ohio USA. Thanks for chiming in, lini. Just so I'm understanding you correctly, you are thinking that....

1. The black "upper half" might be a Signet TK1Ea cartridge.
2. And the gray "lower half" might be a TK3Ea stylus (where a black TK1Ea stylus might normally have been used)?

Do I have that right? Seems to make sense.
