Heresy advice please...

I am in the final days of a refinishing of an excellent pair of first generation Klipsch Heresy speakers. I am doing these for my adult son who, for many years, has been using speakers consisting of JBL D130s 15" woofers and O75 ring radiator tweeters. These in custom (and gigantic) bass reflex enclosures.

Certainly the Heresys should provide much improved mid-range "presence" and detail, and he is looking forward to his "new" sound.

He has asked me a question that I can't answer... He knows these Klipsch speakers would benefit from the extended bass he could get from one or more sub-woofers. And there lies the question: should he use a single sub or a pair? Which sub - or subs - would match well with the Heresys and not break the bank?

I'm eager for some guidance that I can pass along to my son. Many thanks!

I’m using twin subs with my super heresies, which extend the bass to 40 hz, rolling off into the 30’s. Stock Heresy speakers will most certainly benefit from subwoofers, iirc, they roll off at 58 Hz

Twin Dayton Audio Sub 1200's as stands puts the Heresy at the correct height and allows moving them away from the front wall for superior imaging. Connected in stereo, one right the other left retains the Heresy sound only BIGGER now with 25hz on tap

These were also modified for bi-amping.

Any M/K subs match prefect. If you can connect them rite out of the networks low end, you'd be golden.
I'm using 2 MX 70-Bs with my LaScala's, set @ 40 hz & they work fine.

I would suggest going with 2 subs if you can.

More than a few of us from the "Old Forum" built some of these...

Not a very hard build and these little subs put out nice bass and have a friendly footprint.
I power mine with a pair of Dayton plate amps, built into each back of the cabinets.

after I finish my current Super Heresy project, I plan on doing a pair Super Chorus speakers, combining the best attributes of the Chorus, LaScala and Cornwall speakers. After those are done, I think I've found what I'm doing next!

If he enjoys bass, a subwoofer will be needed with your Heresy's. One good 12" sub should be enough. Look at REL, SVS, or JL Audio subwoofers. Pick one that's designed for use in 2-channel audio systems.

I'll add that in my experience, 1 subwoofer was sufficient. However, when I added a 2nd, it was markedly better; not in terms of more bass, that's not necessarily how subwoofers should be used in a balanced system, but it made it clearer, more subtle as with 2 subs, each one is working a little less harder than one alone.

I agree with using a sub with Heresys and probably most all of the Klipsch speakers. I have CF-3's, which have quite good bass, but I still use a Sunfire HRS-12 sub I've owned for 14 years now. I used it with Cornwalls, Klipschorns, Valencias, KLF-30's, ads L1230's, and anything else I had.

Post those Super Chorus as you go....

I love my Chorus lls, & my 84 corns. I personally wouldn't touch the motor board to change the mid. I have the Altec 811 w/K55v driver sitting on top of the corns & the 311 w/902 on top of my LaScalas. Whole new ball game with both sets of speakers! Oh, & ALK crossovers on boff. The OP knows my $.02, so good lick with your discission.

I should have mentioned the Dayton Audio Sub 1200 is one of the best bang for the buck 12" subs, mine are the previous edition purchased 10yrs ago for $92/each, they were at the end of the model's run.

The new model now 10yrs old has increased in price accordingly, but still a huge bargain at $179.98 from Parts Express.

For reference I've been running subwoofers for more than 4decades, my current high end subwoofer was $2000 in 1991 dollars. Sure it's superior, it better be at 20X the price.

For a less budget recommendation the Rythmik F12SE would be my choice.

These will be a scratch build. The cabinets will generally resemble Choruses, however, they will have more volume, as per the Cornwall and use an 18x10” horn with a 2” driver, as a nod to the LaScala and one of @Daveintn’s fantastic tweeters and rear ports. The goal is to build a speaker with the Chorus’s footprint, but with the range of the Cornwall and approaching the sensitivity of the horn-driven LaScala. Fortunately, I’m getting assistance in the design from someone with much, much more experience than me.

Has he listened to them (before you started the refinish)? I love my H1's without any subs. They seem to hit well for my diverse style(s) of music.
BTW; we want to see pics of the finished product!

Try not to go with the 700/400 horn, as I had no luck with my LaScala ll with the 55M driver..... That's why I'm using the Altec horns. Look into Altecs 811 or 511 horn. Friendly advice, that's free.

Plenty of bass when on the floor against the front wall but imaging and soundstage will suffer. Now that's not always a bad thing depending on the setup, like those in my master bedroom.

Set up to the side of the bed imaging and soundstage were not a priority. Originally setup with one of my favorite amps with the Heresy in a minimalist system, it's warm character matches them well, Kenwood KA-4006.

Now with a Kenwood silver stack with a KA-7300 still waiting for me to get off my ass and build the shelf for The Rock to complete the system.

And if on the floor spiking really tightens up the bass and protects the bottoms from getting scratched.
