I spent alot of time in Stuttgart. I would cash my paycheck at the bank by the main train ( Bonhauf ? not sure of the spelling) station and then go through to a gallery where there was all stores of all kinds on both sides. No cars. About half way up on the right was a record store. If I remember right, it was 4 floors of all records.

It was like LP heaven. By thew time I walked up and down both sides, I would have spent half my paycheck.

Of course, back then it was still German marks. The time I spent in Germany was the best time of my life. The people were the best in all of Europe.

Didn't mean to get off topic on this thread but this is the first person I have seen that is from Stuttgart. I was actually stationed in Boblingen. About 30 minutes from Stuttgart but I spent most of my off time in Stuttgart. Much more to do there.

I will be coming back to Germany soon. My wife is also from there. She is from up North in Oberkerchin. I didn't meet her in Germany though. She was already in the States. Long story how she got here. Maybe we could PM some time. I have lots of stories from Germany.

I couldnt believe it! The shop you mean near the main station (Bahnhof :thmbsp was the famous "Radio und Photohaus Lerche" ! Yea, you are right, this was a fantastic place to buy records and later CD`s. I did not earn my own money at that time yet, but I spent a lot of time there also, to look for records I would like to wish for Birthday e.g.

The shop really had 4 floors of all kinds of records but that was not all!!! There were 3 shops in this street (Königsstaße=King's Street) that we called "Der obere Lerche, der mittlere Lerche und der untere Lerche. (the upper, the middle and the down Lerche) The one you meant, was the nearest to the station so, it was the 3rd one. ;-)
I do not remember the middle shop very well, it was the smallest one, but the upper had again the whole cellar full of classical records and the roof full of Jazz.

Well, I said famous, because it was well known over the borders of Stuttgart also: I remember some netherland friends of my parents: When they came to Stuttgart, they first went to "Lerche" and spent hours to buy records, they could never find elsewhere...

All 3 shops are gone now... The building of the one you meant even doesnt exist any more: They destroyed the whole quarter to build a new warehouse there. :thumbsdn:

But in Stuttgart there is still a new, very very fine store for CDs: its hidden behind the "Tagblatturm", but it is for classical only.

The only store which comes close to the records shop of Lerche, which I know, is the "Saturn" in Cologne. It still exists and afaik the whole tower is full of Cds:
