Hilton Valentine, the founding guitarist of the Animals has passed away at 77. Who can forget the classic riff he recorded on their version of "House of the Rising Sun". It really made the song IMHO.

Great LP, these guys were especially tight. Hilton's guitar work is a joy, seemingly underated at the time. Not a monster shredder, but really played to the song.

My all-time favorite Animals song is "It's My Life". The riff in that has always grabbed me. It is essential '60's.

The Animals have been in rotation, lately, on the basement system. They've been helping me plow through the laundry.

Even me Mommie enjoyed the Animals and had me record an 8-track for her - in the 70's. Her favorite song was: "Orange & Red Beams".

My nine year old grandson really likes their song Boom Boom. He plays football so sometimes we'll sing along and change the words. I like the way you hit. I like the way you tackle.

Well, not sure about "rich and famous," but for those that know he did an arpeggio that launched countless 60's teen's playing guitar. And THAT is a pretty good legacy.

Somewhere around here I have a comp album with that song on it mistakenly listed as “Orange and Red Beans” lol. The way I heard it that song was about Eric witnessing the birth of his child while on acid and seeing beautiful rays of colored light surrounding them.

Valentine’s memorable guitar intro on “House Of The Rising Sun” is right up there with Reggie Young’s on Elvis’ “Suspicious Minds”.

RIP, Maestro Valentine.

Love his sound in I'm Gonna Change the World. And his subtly rhythmic and harmonic fills in songs like We Gotta Get Outta This Place are timeless and help build the song - that original guitarist from Cake, not to mention Spoon, seem to come out of his style.
