Home made tonearm ideas.

That's no bad Idea!
my shell intend to do that but the cart in mind Grado is little long that the one in the picture, but I will make some improvement to try both,
I have a very strong sheet of phenolic cotton to make the cart holder and reduce the shell in size. The mass will be maybe with a delta of 1.0 gr I guess.

Is lighter in 1.3 gr than the mock up so i am still within the ball park.

That's much better! I would beef up (make stronger) the phenolic extension, but this is a good place to start listening...:music:

the extension and crossbeam will be in mahogany.
the Black allen screw will be reduced to lose weight.
The phenolic and the wood are almost the same weight so nothing to worry! I liked the idea, look much better and pro!

I ordered cardas wire and clips.
Finished the fine tune counterweight that allow to adjust between 1.0 to 2.1 gr.
The final effective mass will be calculated as soon the wires and clip are installed.

First of all thanks a lot to the few people that kept interest in this thread.

Here is the wire position test.
Not easy to locate it because the tonearm sensitivity. So I need to find a place where the resistance is the lowest posible and compensate it with the anti-skate. VTF is not a issue so far.
The wire was placed temporarily from outside.

Using a dremel i cut the clips. IMO are too long.
And prepared the wire for the clips.
Strip of was pain in the neck, but not impposible.

Yes they are too long, hard to fit in the space. I cut them down too. They weren't made for cartridges of course: they were inside those huge old connectors on computer cables ages ago. I used to buy 30 or so at a time for 3 bucks (10¢ each) at RS. Only the tips were gold-plated, where contact is made. Lots of DIY'ers used them for audio, because they fit different-size pins better than the old type — eventually companies caught on, called them "audiophile" and jacked the price way up. Last I saw Cardas sold them for $2 each.

You say yours are from Cardas. It looks to me, from photos, Cardas replated the whole thing gold. The ones in your photo are not fully plated. Did you mean "Cardas-type" clips? IMO it doesn't matter electrically, and a few bucks isn't the end of the world, but if you paid Cardas prices...

The clips you are right there is a lot of selers that post as cardas when is not. I bought the kit for fair price. If everything work as should be. I will upgrade with better material.

Very interesting and impressive project!
But I'm a stupid Swede and new into TT so I fail to understand how the tonearm is attached at the pivot point. Some kind of magnet or special bearing?
Probably is in your description but my English is a bit lacking in technological terms.
