How Do You Talk? - Quiz

Lived my whole life in Johannesburg South Africa, yet it's put me in Jersey City / Yonkers!

When I saw "Lost in Yonkers" I didn't think the language was particularly familair.

Roly poly puts me in Tulsa? I've also heard them referred to a pill bugs but I thought roly poly was kinda common to the South.

Murray

I took it and it matched me with a small area covering SE PA with a smattering of the West Coast.I did come from SE Pa many years ago and, remember, we grew up with TV shows from California so it is spot on for me! I believe the trick is that we called the sandwiches Hoagies and that places me perfectly.

It likes Shreveport, LA best for me. I was raised in northeast Texas, which is not extremely different from northwest Louisiana.

That is awesome! It gave me two locations, one is 60 miles away, (Denver,) and the other is where both of my paraents are from, (Omaha.)

Puts me right at home.

Same here. It said Boston/Worcester/Providence, which pretty much perfectly triangulates where I grew up. I was sure the fact that my parents are Hoosiers would throw it off.

It also correctly pegged where my wife grew up in Maryland.

I answered choosing the words that I would have used when I was a kid. It nailed it for me, Newark/Paterson. Oh what a wonderful world!

I said gym shoes (what we called them when I was in school) instead of sneakers (what I call them today) and that nailed me perfectly to Chicago (2nd and 3rd were Rockford IL and Aurora IL).

Apparently if you are born and raised in Milwaukee, spend a few years in Chicago and Pittsburgh, then move to Detroit for almost 30 years, you will speak like you live in Reno NV...

Well, I just retook it and apparently "bubbler" and "kitty corner" got me bounced back to Wisconsin.

They weren't in the first go round, and "bubbler" is a Wisconsin trump card...

My wife thinks calling a sandwich a hoagie helped place her. I think what nailed me as a Chicago guy was my answer to "do you call a person a jerk-off, jack-off or jag-off"?---- jag-off, of course.

I took the test a couple of times. I thought it would be interesting because I have lived in so many places. Born and raised in central Illinois until age 12, then Denver until 18, then NC (Marines), Denver, southern CA (Marines), overseas (Okinawa Japan), Denver, Omaha, Denver, SE WI, Denver, NM, NC, and finally SE MI. I've been exposed to the way a lot of people talk; and some rubbed off on me.

First time, it had me kind of between Illinois and Colorado; it said Madison, WI and Omaha, NE. Well, I lived in Omaha for two years and in Kenosha, WI (close enough to Madison) for six years.

Second time, it put me in Wichita, KS or Albuquerque. Lived in ABQ for two years, but I've only worked a few weeks in Wichita and never lived there. I suspect because I said (the second time) that a submarine sammich is a "po' boy." I didn't have a word for a sub sammich growing up; we never had them. I picked up "Po' Boy" in the Marines. Maybe it's a Wichita term?

Still, I'm a mid-western boy and it shows. We wore tennis shoes (I have never played tennis) and had 'catty-corner' intersections. Supper and Dinner mean the same thing, I say 'merry', 'Mary', and 'marry' the same way, a water cooler is called a water cooler (and not a 'bubbler' as the Wisconsinites call it), and a carbonated drink is a soda.

And I have no word for when it is raining while yet a sunny day.

The first time I took it I answered correctly and it put me within 80 miles of where I live.

The second time, I lied about all the answers and it put me in Washington D.C.
