How much of the day do you have music playing?

How much of the day do you have music playing?

After scrolling through this thread, had only found the one poll dealing with "When" do you listen to music?

So, decided to see just how long most have music going on, either listening or for background. TV background doesn't really count unless it's a music channel.

From the time I'm up, until TV at night the radio is pretty much on. The SO says, leave it for the dog...esp when we go out, which is on rare occasion now.

Listening
times have been erratic as of late, with maybe only a half to and hour of dedicated listening. Some times I'll go AM radio and catch a "Talk Show" for an hour or so.

But all told, I guess there's music in the air for at least eight-nine hours a day here.

I listen to music all day at my desk while working. Sit-down-and-listen averages a couple hours a day - more some days and none when time doesn't allow.

If I can have music playing it is. Even at work onboard Navy ships it’s my iPhone and BT speaker.

Most days, none. The system gets fired up maybe twice a week for an hour or two. Besides that, the house is quiet. I've gone months w/o turning it on at all.

As the system got better, it no longer works for background. Listening to music has become like watching a movie.

I find myself listening to podcasts now in places like the car and the kitchen where 10 years ago, it would have been music.

No choice for me either. I can go for days without listening to music. The system gets turned on maybe once or twice a week for an hour or two. Other than that, the house is quiet. Listening to music has become like watching a movie. It either gets 100% of my attention, or it doesn't get played.

If I'm working music is on continuously but it's just background noise that I rarely pay attention to. I try to find time daily to actually sit down and just listen to the main system. But a lot of days I come home to the old lady watching TV and my 2 channel is in the same room as the idiot box, so I tend to go to the bedroom and read as my attention for TV is really low these days.

If I'm just putting around the house music is usually on. Today is my first day off in over a week and other than taking the dog for a walk, I've been alternating between goofing off in the yard and sitting in the living room listening to records.

So I guess I'm kinda none of the above too because it's really dependent on the day. A lot of days the main system doesn't get turned on, and some days it's on all day.

I know this question has been asked... although I don't recall if it was accompanied by a "poll" format.

Anyway, today's answer same as the previous and the one previous to that, if this Q dates back to an even earlier time: ALL DAY, starting @ around 7:00 a.m. until ~ 7-8 p.m. Daily. Incuding weekends. It's been this way since circa late 1980s.

cc: @Quadman2

PS: Now I'll "tic" a dot @ The Poll Form.... WAIT: I cannot b/c The Poll Form does not have a response category that suits my response.

Now, were ya to add a response "More than three hours", well then you're in like Flint.

Check for PM.

Last criteria didn't go through...in place now.

I don't see the "<30 minutes" and/or "0 minutes" per day. selections. Because that's what it's been for me more and more lately.

Sorry if it's not quite the exact fit.

Do a mention in your write up to describe why the time period is so short. I'd be more than interested if you followed this up.

Have a great day, and try to get a bit more :music: in.

13k posts on an audio forum, but you don't listen to music? I don't get it.

As the system got better, it no longer works for background.

Can you elaborate? I don't get this either.

I even use my Magnepans for background music if I'm in that part of the house. They are in the basement, but so is my shop, our second kitchen (it's a Polish thing...), overflow pantry, storage, and a Smith machine. If I'm in the basement and I feel like listening to music I'll turn on the main system. I'm nowhere near the sweet spot, but it still creates sound throughout the whole area.

Critical listening, maybe only a few hours a week. Music is nearly always on unless I'm in the family room/kitchen area and my wife is home. Then the idiot box will be emitting its blue glow and the HT system will be on.

Lol, no apologies needed. I'm sure my habits are quite the outlier in your survey.

In answer to your question. I'm not exactly sure why. Truth be known I did most of my extensive listening in my teens and 20s. I think it started tapering down since then ( and certainly it would cycle through more/less within those periods)

Most lately? Not sure. I haven't even fired up my main system this year. Any listening I have done has been very late at night using my phone and headphones. That one is dangerous as one song will lead to dozens and suddenly It's 3am and I meant to got to sleep at midnight. But that only happens occasionally.

But by and large I actually value peace, solitude, and silence more and more. I'm the opposite of wanting/needing to have music playing all the time.

Which of course leads to, why in the hell am I in this hobby anymore? A subject for another thread no doubt.

Have read/heard that some just need that background sound going on the whole time while in the house. Began to wonder is this is a good thing? Or bad?

I know that some, can't stand quietness in their lives. Might have more impact now, due to this virus thingy.

Curious.

Pretty much every shop I've been in has a stereo playing all day. It makes the day go faster, plus local news (it's typically radio). Also gives the folks something to talk about during the day other than work or bitching about their wives.

It can also act like white noise. I had a system in my office at work. Not so much to listen to music, but to drown out all the other office hum. The music was a nice benefit.

Lots of folks have systems in their shop or garage that are obviously not set up for critical listening. My old AVR and a pair of New Large Advents serve that purpose in my garage.

Quiet is for study, reading, conversation and introspection. Oh, and hunting and fishing. Otherwise, why not have music?;);)
