A mate of mine Peter is a plastics scientist.
He told me that he had formulated a vinyl mix for a record pressing factory but had already dropped it off:tears:.
He said he had to do more and would ring me when he took it over.
The new formulation had to have a higher melting point.
The machines were almost antiques.
The process simple.
They poured the vinyl pellets into a shute where it was ground and heated.
A blob of vinyl was pushed up onto the press, the record was pressed then spun around whilst the edge was chamfered/smoothed off.
A label was applied and it slid into a sleeve.
The guy tested the first few by flexing them excessively.
He bent them almost in half and they didn't break.
Very tough stuff:thmbsp:
He then tested it on a turntable for surface noise.
I asked for that copy.
He looked at me and said "Don't you tell anyone you have this"
I asked Peter about mixing some coloured vinyl which he said was no problem.
I'd love to have a contact on the press to do some colour vinyl pressings
