How to improve your Polks (or... how to build Tannolks)

They are now home......what did the wife think? Can they stay?
I think a little stain or at least some clear finish like we talked about will help the situation... She liked the grill cloth on the Forte's.

They'll stay, though.

Putting a new baffle on those cabinets was a great idea, imagine how many different sized "boxes" there are laying around.

I might have to get me some tools, you could just glue and screw another baffle over the top of the existing ones and cut the speaker holes with a jigsaw.

I have a pair of old Sony speakers and with some bracing and a new baffle they might be ideal for the econowaves.

Now you're thinking!

A little more time with these, and the word that comes to mind is "smooth." The detail is there, but never shrill. I'm still playing with the settings on the crossover a bit, but I'm loving what they can do.

Gary, your room definitely contributed quite a bit of bass reinforcement. A lot of that is gone here. Of course, I'm also running just 3WPC with the 2A3 amp...

I'll roll in the MC30s later.

With that big ol' room you've got there it'll probably sound a bit lean. You'll have to go really low to get into room gain (where the wavelength of the sound gets bigger than the longest room dimension and you start pressurizing the room instead of bouncing around longitudinal waves). A bit more moxy from your amp might help but it's not really the underlying problem.

Got spikes in 'em over the weekend. Kind of hard to get a good picture of them...

You did a very nice job with these. British drivers in American cabinets? Kind of like a "British Invasion". :smoke:

How's the sound of the Tannolks working for you?
No looking back!

It's such a different sound that sometimes I have to think about what I'm hearing, but I can't get enough of it. I'm pretty sure I have the crossovers dialed in where I want them, so the recap project starts soon. Maybe this weekend.

Well, they're out of play for a few days to get some finish on the cabs and to retool the crossover networks a bit.

The cabinets are responding well to Danish oil and I think a few coats will do nice things for them.

The crossovers are cracked open, switch gadgetry has been removed, and the old caps clipped out... :worried: The work is a little unnerving, but I expect good things. I'm taking pictures along the way and will start another thread for that later.

looking at your placement it seems you have all kinds of room behind the speakers. You need to find another set of the cabs and glue them to the back doubling your volume and get that last octave :D

Got them finished. I used several coats of Danish oil, and I plan to hit them with some Howards Feed and Wax in a few days.

The Danish oil gave just the right amount of warm color to the unfinished ply, and really brought out the grain of the walnut veneer. It also enhanced the contrasting layers of the rounded over plywood edges, which I think is a cool effect.

Overall, I think they're really sharp! I dig the two tone thing.

Pictures of the finished cabs for Gary:

Thats downright gorgeous Nate!

True dat! I love the grain you got down around the ports.

Now all you need is some cookie coolers from RayW and you are all set!

Give me a day or so to run to Walmart and I'll be selling Audiophile speaker driver protection devices for....ummm....$79.95/pair.

Wow, those turned out nice. Good work on the finishing. Is there a special reasoning for your choice of "Sonicap'? I need to buy some speaker network caps and am curious.

The Sonicaps worked well for me in my Forte's. I thought they really sounded nice, and seemed to be a good mid-priced cap. Not silly expensive, and good tolerances, too. Bob Crites uses them extensively in his Klipsch crossover rebuilds, and I know of several Tannoy users that have reported good results with them.

Ray, thanks but no thanks for the "cookie coolers"... :D My three year old has been very good about keeping her fingers away from the drivers thus far. I'm not going to worry about them anymore. Not much, anyway.
