Those are fairly early (late 50s, early 60s) Fraziers, judging by the configuration. They are kind of like giant versions of my Frazier Monte Carlos. If they are close to you, you shouldn't hesitate.
 
ya sure can't beat the price as it stands now. Frasier is a very well reguarded speaker, but I can't say I know anything about this particulare model, other than I would be all over them..
 
I know nothing about this model, but isn't it interesting how common it was for drivers to be mounted flush with the back of the baffle board, as these are, with the full width of the baffle hole between you and the driver frame? The drivers had cork or other gasket material on the front, and that was that.

Now everything is designed to be front-mounted, usually with t-nuts, and the gasket material is on the back of the driver frame.

I don't have any other observation, except that I much prefer the front-mounting route, which lets you have 1" or 1.5" or 2" thick baffles, looks better, etc. Was this a gradual or quick change, and when did it happen?
 
i wouldn't hesitate to go get 'em. you will be shocked; and when you do get 'em, keep it on the down-low. us frazier lovers wanna keep on picking 'em up for beans
 
I only bid a dollar over so I lost. Let me explain why I didn't go for this Frazier. I have seen a lot of Frazier's since I have been in the speaker repair business for 40 years. This looked like a box that someone but a new speaker board in and mounted the maybe Frazier speaker on it. The small horn looks like a plastic pizo.It doesn't have a voice diaphragm in it. They may be commercial Frazier boxes. I remember them when I used to do sound reenforcement. They are almost square.To many unknowns to spend money on when I have many great speaker now. I asked the seller about the horns and he didn't know anything about them as he was just flipping these. Seller said these weigh 68 pounds and that sounds like the sound reenforcement boxes from the 1960's.The picture looked like it had the mounting brackets on the back.

Todd Crane, Frazier's former national Sales Manager (and NC/SC resident) bought them.

They are clearly Frazier boxes and drivers: notice the porting top and bottom on the back. The horn is a standard Frazier one (not a Piezo). They were used in several of Jack's speakers before he did go to the Motorola Piezo.

I'm guessing they MIGHT be something like the Del Mar... only bigger. That would explain the painted side (Frazier often only veneered three sides, with feet on the "bottom"). Hopefully Todd will tell more (over on the Klipsch Forum).
 
On the back I saw the Frazier badge on the top right corner and the ports but I bid all I they were worth to me.

Ed, here's what Todd told me:

PM they were a pair of Frazier Black Box III's. We only made them for one customer, Audio by Zimit, Roslyn, LI, NY who sold more Black Boxes than any other dealer in the US. In the 50's, 60's and 70's . He used to do at least 10 grand a month at dealer cost, and mostly in black boxes. He'd order finished product when he had to. It was Dyna stuff and Frazier. That's all he sold. We'd make these things 50 at a time, and he'd order at least 10 a month. I couldn't believe that I bought the pair for 53.00. I'm going to Charlotte, NC tomorrow to pick them up! joelongwood has some Black Boxes (among his "till death do us part" collection), and I passed on a pair last year because I didn't want 'em shipped from NY to TX.

Yes I do........and I bought them at Audio by Zimet in Roslyn. Man, did Sid Zimet push those things out the door. I brought my friends in and they always walked out with Black Boxes. My old college roommate still has a pair........mmm, I wonder if he's using them? :D
The original Black box was a cone tweeter coupled with an 8" woofer in a slotted enclosure (slots are in the front).
I have the Black Box II, which has the same 8" woofer but a horn tweeter.
I'm driving them with a Harman Kardon HK730 and, to my ears, the sound is excellent. Sid would always switch between the AR models (he sold @20% discount) and the Fraziers......it was pretty much a night and day comparison. The ARs sounded as if someone had thrown a thick blanket over them, while the Fraziers sounded as if the musicians were in the room. I remember him turning the treble all the way down and the bass all the way up on a Dynaco amp while the Fraziers were playing and him saying, "There, now they sound like ARs!" He was a real no nonsense kind of guy. Of course, being young and a Consumer Reports believer, I always bought the ARs, until I finally succumbed and bought the Black Boxes a few years later. I still have all of them (no surprise there), the ARs and the Black Boxes, and enjoy each for what they can do. I've actually been using a stack with the Fraziers on the bottom and some Rectilinear Mini IIIs on the top. It sounds like a strange pairing, but the Mini IIIs impart a richness to the sound that the Fraziers at times lack. Anyone who has heard this stack finds it to sound better than either pair alone. Man, I love this hobby! :D
 
I have seen quite a few of the black box with the 8" speaker in it. When I was building speakers in the late 70's and early 80's I built some very much like the ones on e/bay. I built a lot of custom speakers back then but most of them went into disco clubs and were made to take a lot of power. I have very little knowledge of Frazier so I am glad someone got them who will appreciate them. It will be interesting to find out how the gentleman who had them got them. So was this speaker a big version of the 8" job? The speaker cut out in not original as it shows no black paint in the cut out.Has it been enlarged? Run a post under speakers and let us know what you find out and some history on this model.

I'll let you know when I hear more. I think about $52 would have been my limit, too.

Now a pristine Black Box I or II, that would be another matter!
