Huge McIntosh Auction

I am skeptical this is one collector. Why all the glass parts for example? I also think unless you buy at a scrap price (chassis cost essentially), you are taking a chance, but I am basically a pretty conservative type.

It was one collector, it said so in the auction details when I was registering.
One single deceased estate.

Imagine being the family of the deceased and not being remotely interested in this sort of gear, and then having to sort it out.......There's a lot of gear, theres Fisher, Marantz, and a bunch of other stuff as well...

The amount of equipment is just mind blowing for a single collector.

There must be over 30 MC60's on first page (I lost count), ton of other tube amps, tuners, cabinets, you name it.
I would love to add a few pieces to my collection and will definitely follow this one but I don't think I should bid on it. Shipping is just to high of a risk and price could be the issue as well. Of course, it just happens auction is on the other end of the country and picking up would be impossible?
I bet few AK'r within driving range will watch this one closely.

I've had a fairly serious 'Jones' for living with some Mac unity coupled joy since school days when I first saw them. Too bad it's out of driving distance.
 
A collection like this is a function of a die-hard that scoured the area for decades for these units. Word gets out and referrals of hey, I saw one of those tube amps you buy ... And so it goes. Having done it myself for a decade, and having purchased 4-500 pieces of McIntosh in that time, I can tell you it's easily possible. I bought and sold though ...

What makes this collection amazing is the number of tube units, many of which I'm sure were purchased one at a time. I probably had 75 tube Mc pieces. Today, I have but one left ...
 
Amazing hoard. Two things caught my eye: The MQ-101 Environmental Equalizer, and that unusual Technics SL-PT1200 CD player. But I doubt I'll actually bid on either. Too bad they didn't have any of the Mac speakers that go with that EQ.
 
yes, would agree with SaturationPt. prices were similar to ebay or in some cases a bit more. I bid on 14 items with a few seconds to go, but was outbid on all except one.

There were 3 MC75, all went for 1800 to 2k.

If you wanted a MAC FM tuner, they were reasonable.....

I had no idea the Fairchilds had become that collectible. I have a pristine 255 I have always intended to rebuild if I ever found a second one. Almost snapped one up on ebay about 5 years ago at a reasonable price but lost the bid with seconds to go. I would not pay over $500 for one. Guess I'll not find one anytime soon (or ever). I did bid on one of the McKay-Dymek DA-5 active AM antenna boxes but set my limits at $70. It went for $80 plus tax, auction premium and shipping which I judged as too much. I'm getting pickier as I age! I used to spend money on vintage tube gear like a drunken sailor but no more. Tired of tripping over stuff and the "projects" kept piling up.
