Cool. He's certainly one of a kind.
When I saw him, about 15 years ago, I had never heard of him. My dad and I plunked our lawn chairs down in front of the 2nd stage at a blues festival. We skipped the act on the other stage for some reason. A guy close to us struck up a conversation with us, and basically said that we didn't know what we were in for, and that Popa Chubby was probably the best act on the bill. There were some pretty stellar acts that year. When he got to the stage and we saw him, we were kinda confused. He looked like some sort of goofy rapper. When he started to play, our mouths dropped. I bet you could say that for most of the crowd. He absolutely rocked. The guy kept on turning around and pointing at us and saying, "I told you, I TOLD YOU YOU WOULD LOVE HIM!".
Your title reminded me of a picture I took during the set. The sun was going down and the picture was kinda ruined, it was just a silhouette. But because of his size, it turned out to be a keeper. It's almost as if he was blocking out the sun.
My dad told me a story of seeing him a few years ago at a different festival. After the set they were walking with some friends and a golf cart transporting Popa approached. My parents friend is one of the nicest people ever, but when she has a few drinks, she has a hard time shutting up. She jumped out in front of the cart to stop it and started telling Popa how great the show was, but he needs to smile more. She then said something like, "Here, I'll show you. Breath in, aaaand smile, breath in aaaand smile." Popa was scowling, and my dad was waiting for him to tell her where to go, but he went along. He said the forced, phony smile on Popa's face was priceless.
. Now I'm even more excited to see him play. I actually never heard of the guy till hearing this song on Pandora. I since got several of his CDs and was happy to see that he's performong within a short drive from where I live.
