I'm bidding on an item on ebay, bingo!

So I see an item i'm interested in 2 days ago (not going to say what it is) and I get outbid last night so this morning I decide to play the game. I bid, bid again and I eventually get the bid over double of what it is now and I'm still not the highest bidder. Guess I scared off the other bidder, got an email 2minutes ago.

No, you just bid over their highest bid, and someone else decided they didn't want in the game any more either... and when you do things like that and jack up the price early, there's a good chance you're either going to have to pay a lot more than you want, or someone is going to snipe you at the very end..

Tis true, the real money always shows up in the last few seconds of the auction. Anything prior is just a waste of time. Watch the number of bids as the auction proceeds, you'll see the activity increase as the auction nears the end. I've been the snipee on more than one occasion and I thought I was the sniper!

That happened to me a few nights ago. There were 0 bids on an audio generator. Opening started at 69.99. I bid exactly 69.99. A few seconds before close the bid went up to the next increment; $75.00 or so, and then the auction ended. Two bids, $75.00.

About an hour later the seller sent me a second chance. I took it because it was still a decent price, but I am convinced the other bid was a scam to pump up the bid price.

You can look at the persons "bid retraction" history.. If he or she has 247 bid retractions on his history then......................
 
100% feedback, over 400 and a member since 05, I think it's legit. I'll watch it, I may have to play the sniper game. I am however glad the retraction came into play. Some people bid high expecting to push off the last bidder. In this case I don't think the person thought it would go as high as it did and retracted.

Which i'm fine with, I have a max in mind. I never bid higher than my max, if I don't win it so be it. Right now its sitting very low and I know it will increase. I think it was a legit retraction.

There are two ways to have your bid run up when you keep bidding as you did.

The first is just somebody trying to find out how much other bidders are willing to pay. You keep bidding, either manually or because you set an eBay proxy bid, and somebody else keeps bidding, until you stop and/or hit your max proxy amount. Then, the other guy knows what his current competition is willing to bid.

The second is when the seller has a shill bidder going. You keep bidding, and the shill bidder keeps bidding, until one of you stops. If you're the high bidder, you just got run up. If the shill bidder ends up as the high bidder near the end of the auction, he can simply withdraw/cancel his bid and you're now the high bidder. Or, if the shill bidder ends up as the high bidder and doesn't get outbid by you or anybody else, then you get a "Second Chance Offer" email after the end, telling you the winning bidder backed out, so you can have the item for your last bid.

In either case, a classic example of why serious eBayers all snipe. It's the only way.

As long as you have a max in mind and you dont go over that then.....All is well.There will always be another deal down the road. Sometimes with a great "buy it now" so you dont have to play the bidder war!!

Kinda takes the fairness out of ebay, the whole sniper idea. I've used it but only on something I really need like a part, audio equipment comes and goes.

Absolutely correct.

However, if somebody was just trying to find out what other bidders were willing to pay, now he knows, even though everyone else is back down to where they were. And, this is why shill bidders don't retract their bids, and you get the "Second Chance Offer".
