IMF owners thread!

Ibwas listening to some choral music through the imf tls80s today up loud and i notice some slight distortion on the right b139 . Like what it sounds like if you put your knuckle on the Kef B139 it gives a slight rattle. Its not related to low frequencies only on midrange frequencies of the clean choral vocals. I wonder if this could be a speaker fault or capacitor as it only happens under higher listening levels and only on right channel. Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Try rotating the B139 through 180 degrees. Might be sag of the speaker allowing voice coil rub.
Thanks, do i just remove the b139s cabinet screws , pull out of cabinet a little and just rotate the entire speaker 180 degrees? Cheers for the tip!

Thanks hopefully that fixes the issue. I does seem like harmonic vibration rather than distortion due to failure given that its only noticable at certain spl and upper midrange frequencies of choir vocals.. lets hope it works.

Hi, in the same time look ar the spider (suspension of the coil) if it well glue all around. It happen to me the coil be unglue fron the spider. I have to made it fix.

Thanks master, i will inspect everything on my next day off. Also going to get some active carbon sheet for the mid range. Cant wait!

Trialling the tls80s with some techno and they sound absolutely superb . Frequency range and bass presentation is solid as a rock and very controlled . Not slow or sloppy at all. Quite impressive to behold.

does ayone have any advice on what preamp topology works best with the imf's? Power amp is a 200 watt ss with tls80s. Im assuming something with lots of gain as the tls are low sensitivity. Thinking a luxman or arc tube pre . Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations as synergy is key. Cheers

Welcome to the IMF Owners thread. Pull up a chair and stay a while. :beerchug:

There's a few of us kicking around here on AK. Of course you all know I'm a big IMF fan.

I've put together a bunch of resources for restoring IMF speakers in a post here.

I currently own the following:

IMF Reference Standard Professional Monitor Mk IV
2x IMF Super Compact, one will soon be modded to be like an IMF Super Compact II

I have owned the IMF TLS 50 II and IMF TLS 80 II in the past.

So what do you guys have or have owned in the past? Share your thoughts on this oddball brand as well. And of course, put up some pictures.

Here is a shot of when I had both the IMF TLS 50 II and IMF TLS 80 II:

You can see some of the non-original drivers in the second shot there, notably the square tweeter and the midrange driver. The bass woofer and tweeter are original. In the first shot you can see the crossover board of the IMF TLS 80 II that wasn't working, so this was basically the day I got the IMF TLS 80 II's.

Here's a shot of the TLS 50 II when I got original/replacement drivers:

Then I sold the IMF TLS 50 II's shortly after, and got my hands on the real prize.

Here they are in their original boxes, being hauled back to where they reside now:

And here they are unboxed, at home:

Next to the IMF TLS 80 II (yeah, I thought that was a big speaker!):

The box label:

The distributor for IMF speakers in Canada was in Quebec. :)

Then, an AKer gave me this set of IMF Super Compacts to me for free (yes, I couldn't believe it). One tweeter was shot and they were completely original, but after $200 in parts and some elbow grease I got them back to factory spec:

Picture removed due to being huge!! will repost

And then my latest IMF pick-up, another set of IMF Super Compacts from another AKer. Price wasn't as good as the first set but still very good. :)

The above isn't my picture, but the AKer's picture of them (hope ya don't mind :) ). When they come home, hopefully this week or the next, I'll put up some of my own pictures.

So, share your IMF's. :)
hi;
I have owned a pair of ALS 40s for 50 years now. I am trying to decide if it is better to re-foam the existing mid-range components or to replace them with something. I understand that there is a German company that makes a good mid-range (Monacor?). Any advice?? Thanks!

I put this project on hold until i get the correct capacitors. I will contact Falcon to let them know about the wrong values in the kit. I dont think I should change the 60 to an 80 without good reason.
Did you ever hear back? I'm putting the crossovers for my 80mk2's back together with the Falcon kit, and it's a little off from what was on there originally. It looked "pre-tinkered" with though, so I'm not sure the work done before was up to snuff.

Hi, an all the IMF speakers crossovers I always see some 4uf, 6uf,12uf,30uf, 60uf, 100uf never see 80uf, this is a wrong value for shure.

I've used the Monacor MSH-115 Mid-range on my TLS-50mkII and they sound awesome! Good replacement for the Elac 4/200! Here's my rebuild thread...

If those are the original Elac 4/200's... just throw them in a box and send them to me. They're not worth anything... I'll rebuild... err 'dispose' of them for you!

Seriously! Refoam those, they are really rare to come by and will maintain the value of your ALS-40's over having the Monacor's in there. Better yet, repair the Elac's, salt them away and get some Monacors to use as a daily driver.

Hey Yvan! Do you have any links to the active carbon foam? Can't find any with the high density that your using. Cheers

Hi, you should find these pads of active carbon where they sell aquariums , filters and exotics fishs in size 10inch.X 18inch. X 1/2inchs thick. Amazon sell active carbon but check to be shure it 1/2inch. Not 1/4inch. Or 3/8inch. Best regards Yvan.

Thanks mate I found a couple of options. Just density is the factor and they don't show specs but i guess either should be fine at 1/2 inch as you specified. Cheers

Hi, that's what I have "aquaglobe" brand. You need two pads. That's the good stuff.
Thanks mate! You are a true legend;) very happy with my Mk1 tls80s . Cant wait to get a good turntable and tube pre to inch closer to bliss. Dac to power via Spotify is still sublime though. Amazing speakers.
