Indesperate need of music to get excited about

Nas - Illmatic : Not for me. Guns, ho's and mad money isn't something that I just don't get (literally and figuratively).

If you grew up on hip hop like I did, you'd have a deeper appreciation for Nas, his message and his perspective. He's a true lyricist. He's not necessarily "for" the gangsta life, but critical and observant of it. Totally understand if that's not your cup of tea.

If you are at least curious, also find anything with Mos Def or Common on the roster.
 
Yeah. I suggested Illmatic because Nas is basically a cypher. He isn't condoning a lifestyle as much as describing it in vivid detail grit and all. Tellin' it for truth. One Love just makes my chest tight thinking about that dude sitting in jail hearing about his old neighborhood. Then in the last verse Nas gives advice to a tween that had already adopted the lifestyle. It's poignant. And the production is beautiful.

If he doesn't like Illmatic, not sure suggesting left, alt, backpacker, etc. hip hop will do much for him either (which is fine of course). No worries tho. Better luck with the rest of your playlist!

I believe I understand the "telling of stories" aspect of Illmatic - it just that it's too alien for me to appreciate. In short - I can't relate.

Yeah. I understand. I can relate to those stories in a personal way which I think makes a big difference.
 
Warpaint - Warpaint: Now normally I take to "little girls with synths" type music like fish to water...but this is a tad sleepy for me. I guess when it comes to that "shoegazer" sound, I got all I was ever going to get from "Ladies and gentlemen we are floating in space" Still... I think a return visit is in order.

I've decided not to add any more commentary. You all suggested music you like and you like it for your reasons. There's no need for my 2cents in agreement or otherwise. It now seems to be kinda judgmental for me to write these comments.

So just let me say -THANKS! I will listen to all suggestions and I hope to find something that will set the heart a fire!

One of the 2 good albums he made, that one and Stillmatic (I'm a critical bastard when it comes to music).

I've been listening to a Japanese DJ/electro artist who goes by the name Fantastic Plastic Machine. His "FPM" album (from '08 or '09) is great, as is his S/T debut ("Fantastic Plastic Machine"... From '97, I think). Not easy to find, but worth hunting down.

If the OP hasn't heard that one yet, he's missing out. Incredible music, sound and musicianship. The CD is straight-up audiophile quality.

Nah man no hard feelings at all! I'm enjoying reading your perspectives on the music. There are so many records in the world it would be shortsighted to suggest others can't have different taste! Glad to offer suggestions any time.

I know quite a few people who share this opinion. Myself, I think he was never again able to put together an album as cohesive and stunning as Illmatic but I enjoy many of his verses on later releases.
 
And FTR OP .... Any time Illmatic gets brought up all hip hop fans in the room must chime in. It's like a rule or something. No intent to derail the thread!
