Feast of Wire is my favorite as well. I've heard it a gazillion times. Such a great band!! Did you know those guys were the rhythm section for Giant Sand??? I just learned that a couple weeks ago.

I wholeheartedly agree , go straight to 'Sweet Gene Vincent' and then look for
Gene Vincent and the Bluecaps first two LP records 'Blue jean bop' and 'Gene
Vincent and the Blue Caps' after that if you aint got it you aint ever goin' to get it!!
 
I've got a few suggestions, very unrelated to each other:

Devo - For your hard rocking/new age/punk fix. They make some excellent music, their first two albums are especially good...

ZZ Top's self titled first album - awesome blues you have never probably heard

Cal Tjaeder - Awesome jazz and vibraphone when you want to cool out

Merle Haggard - 40 #1's, Country doesn't get any better than this...

Any good pipe organ music

Perhaps just come back with the stuff you like but I think most people who are making suggestion want to know.

I don't know about everyone else, but I make suggestions knowing there's only a 20% chance somebody will like it. Thing is, when they like it, it's often an event for them. I've always been of the opinion that it's important to hear what's out there, more important than having to like it.

Could also check out vibrationsofdoom.com for some out-of-print rock. It is mostly heavy metal but a few bands that might be hard rock at best and some insane speed metal.
The quality of the tracks is horrible but gives you something to check out when you are in a heavy metal mood.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Just wanted to say that I haven't abandoned this thread and am slowly working through the music. So far I've listened to lots of interesting stuff!

MRH - I enjoyed the The Wailin Jennys very much! And jhstone - thank you for reminding me of Kraftwerk - it's something I tried on for size in the 80s and haven't really returned to.
