Inside the Minimus 7: repair and restore

I also have a pair of 7's, the metal series (is there a way to get into them) but one has a bad tweet. Are replacements available?

minimus 7 parts pop up now and then here and on ebay. Ask and I'm sure you will receive.

To get inside the metal ones, gently pry at the corners. The metal grills are held down by a sticky putty. Give it some patience and the grills will come off.

I insert a small allen wrench through the holes and pull gently. That disperses the pressure from your pulling on the grill.
 
I've got some walnut sevens for my living room shelf system. They are quite smooth and definitely full sounding. As you know... but just to say it was definitely the right move to restore what was there. I've never cracked mine and was especially interested to see the crossovers.

They look great!
 
I am of an age where I purchased my Minimus 7s new at the "shack". Now, after many years of service, the wire attachment connections cannot hold wire anymore. Taping the speaker cable to the back is really tacky. The RS website doesn't have anything that appears to fit. Is there anyway to put a 5-way binding post on these things?
 
I expect that a five way binding post might project behind the back of the speaker but would fit if drilled out (and the spring loaded connectors removed).

I blew one of my 2 pairs of Minimus 7s. (Please don't ask how!) Are there replacement speakers available???

It's quite difficult to 'blow' speakers by feeding them too much clean power*, they are usually damaged by over-enthusiastic use of the volume control, which makes the amp 'clip' and send DC to the speakers.

*Under 'normal' circumstances.

I will just say, trust me, the speakers are damaged. It was a repair mistake that sent the volume to maximum instead of off.

For Yamafreak, I will check the voice coils and let you know.
 
Ok, I am going to have to change my post. I got out the two Minimus 7s that I thought had been damaged and they have no problem being manipulated. Then put them on the back channels of my HT system (it was closer) and they played perfectly.

But maybe this isn't the "bad" pair. I have had 4 pair at one time or another. I will keep looking.

"Skinley" was right too! But as an audio retailer in the 60s and 70s I have heard a lot of "Blown" speakers. Most with damaged voice coils. I also got to repair my share of them.

A final thanks to "Shrinkboy" for the URL. I have bookmarked it for future use.
 
I have two sets of these speakers. I bought them at Radio Shack many years ago when they went on sale. My first pair were the silver ones and my second pair were the black finish. Solid little speakers. I'm thinking about recapping them. I even have a set of the wall mounting brackets they sold for these speakers. The black pair were in use in my garage up until a few months ago when I replaced them with a pair of bookshelf Yamaha's I picked up GW. They sound very good to my ears.

No problem. I'm the kinda guy who checks absolutely everything before I replace it. :D
