Inside the Minimus 7: repair and restore

minimi VII's

seen for the first time in public in this or any forum, a pair of Minimi that have been in my possession since the dawn of recorded history. i pulled em apart last year, dropped in the crossover upgrade from the ebay guy, which i had him customize for a 4 ohm woofer, put in the PE Goldwood 4"-ers, painted 'em Hammertone Bronze, with a satin black grill...

now the fronts on a small bedroom HT with a small sub pulling the LF's

ta-DAH!!

oh, drat, forgot the pix

Minimus 7 lack of Magnetic Shielding

Question. I have a pair of 7's and if they are too close to the CRT they affect the screen. At what minimum distance from the TV should the 7's be to eliminate this problem? Is it possible to magnetically shield these speakers or to install a shield between the speakers and the CRT? I am in need of help. gary

Realistic Minimus 7W

Here's another pair of Jpdylon "specials": I got this Realistic Minimus 7W from him last year. Great little speaker that I am setting up in my office.

The Minimus 7 was available with a matching Realistic subwoofer. Can anyone recommend other similar subwoofers (modern or older) that would go well with the Minimus 7? A passive subwoofer would be preferable to an active one, right?

i use an optimus 8" powered sub, which i opened and stiffened with some cross bracing, stuffed the port with foam, filled the cab with polyfill and replaced the woofer with an 8" dayton from PE. run from pre-outs on a yammie a-1 amp into a pair of f-mods on the back of the sub's plate amp. the dayton handles the lows a bunch better and integrates nicely for a small bedroom 2.1 HT

I'll be getting a pair of min 7s this weeknd from a local AKr. Have ordered the upgrade xover from the ebay guy in Fresno,ca. Check his ebay ad for a tek description of the uprade. Just enter minimus 7.
Wondering how to tell the age progression of the 7s by the tweeter type, 1st, 2nd, 3rd

Level matching to your M-7s might be easier with an active sub. Though you may get good results matching a passive sub by adjusting its proximity to walls and corners.

My bedroom setup-of-the-moment has stacked pairs of M-7s. Each stack is fed through its own small Wharfedale PPS-1 passive sub. Each stack/sub combo (4 ohms in this configuration) is powered by one side of a Hafler DH200.
Despite ample power this setup would probably sound thin in a very large room. In a smaller room it ROCKS!
I sourced both Wharfedales, like new in their original boxes, from eBay: one @ $35 shipped and the other @ $20 local pickup. Great bang-for-the-buck ... just like M-7s.

I recently bought a pair of Min 7's to use as fronts in my HT (I have been using Min 7's as rears for a long time). I hooked up the new Min 7's and found them very piercing at times and somewhat tiring to listen to for long periods. I wonder if the tweets are gone. Has anyone had the same experience? Is there a solution for this problem? I have adjusted the treble but it didn't help.

Recommended is 10" to 12" minimal (not set in stone, but on average) or up to 18" or more to be safe, recommended by others.

There's the Optimus & Minimus "V","AV" & "Pro" series, all versions of the Minimus 7s, that are from the factory, a shielded speaker.
some go by AV44 or AV55, Others use the "7" still.

Mine worked pretty well with a Cambridge Soundworks 8s. Can be bought for $77-$125 used.

Flat-plate tweeter was first, and drivers were made in Japan.

Then plastic plate, with a recessed "cone" around the dome cast in plastic around the tweeter.

At some point Korea started building the drivers, but I'm not sure when.

The next move was ported. A port just the right size to get your pinky stuck in.

Then the move to a ribbed enclosure. May have been a new name for 'em at this point. Possibly a later-model Optimus 7.

Might not be pairing well with your HT setup. If the tweeters were bad, they'd most likely be quiet.

What's your HT receiver?

Thanks. That makes sense The tweets wouldn't be working. I'm wondering if I got those new crossovers from the eBay guy if it would make the Min7s a little sweeter.
My receiver is a Denon AVR-3802.

Realistic Nova 4 Question

Have 3 pair of Realistic Min 7's that are wonderful, but I have an OT question I'd like to ask here in case anyone can point me in the right direction.

Last week, I found a pair of Realistic Nova 4's in the G/W with the "Kabuiki" style wood cabinets in superb, mint condition, but the woofers (look like 8") are blown. And I have been unsuccessful in finding a drop-in replacement pair via Google.

Can anyone recommend a source for a drop-in pair for these particular Realistic's?

TIA.

I would try them on another amplifier first to be certain the problem is the tweeters.

The moderator may get me for this, but if no one here has a suggestion, you might start a thread for your Nova 4s.

go to ebay " minimus 7" and scrol to the xover guy lists and read the descript of the upgrade. I got 1 for mine but not in stalled yet.
