Inside the Minimus 7: repair and restore

No? Well I finished the ebay mod on one 7W and I'm hard pressed to hear any difference when I A/B it with the non modded 7W. Here's a picture, maybe I did it wrong?
Yellow to + woofer
Black to - woofer
Blue to + tweeter
Black to - tweeter.
Orange wire nut ties in black from neg. terminal to grounds for woofer and tweeter.
Red and yellow wires from ebay Xover to pos. terminal
Black wires from ebay Xover to ground (woofer & tweeter & neg terminal)
ebay yellow cap where original 4.7uF cap used to be.

i did the mod about a year and a half ago, but took no pix. i simply noted a more robust sound. the x-over simply cuts off the woofer at a certain point, instead of allowing it to run full range, as the stock x-over does. our friend zilch did some extensive testing of the stock and ebay crossover before going on to design his own. many who applied the zilch min 7 crossover agree its the definitive min 7 x-over iteration

True, I know the ebay mod cuts the woofer and also adds a better cap on the tweeter but I'm not hearing the big difference many posters are reporting. And I followed Zilch's mod as well but I had this ebay kit sitting around for over two years and finally used it. Because I'm not hearing much improvement, if any, I wondered if I did it right.

Regarding the eBay kit, "Doesn't do much" would be a fair summary; I suspect you have it right.... ;)

As for the tweeter production, the earlier units without the rings on the mounting plates are "superior" to some people, I haven't been able to tell a difference.

When the people at Club Polk re-do their crossovers, they always mention a period for "burn in" of new parts (caps & resistors), some as much as 200hrs. Maybe letting them play a while will make the difference that you're not hearing now/yet ?

The attempt was credible, and he does a respectable job with the quality of what he sells, but the technology is, well, "incomplete...." :dunno:

I've got pair of 1st gen and love em but the woofers have taken a beating in their 30 years of life. Does anyone know if there's a surround replacement for these, I'd like to re-surround them in an original rubber surround

Good tune + Pushed too much juice = open circuit

Are the original surrounds still in good shape, or are they bad (e.g. holes, tears, etc.) I wouldn't worry about replacing them unless they're actually flawed. ;)

I LOST TRACK of the Minimus 7 threads. I am the proud owner of 4 cherry Min 7's I bought new (on sale) and hardly use.

I want to up grade them. Any suggestions? I had only planned on just replacing the CAP with a good one.

What CAP size (0.0047 uF?), make and place to buy?

Any other MOD to do to nice new condition Min 7's?

Unless you plan on monkeying around with crossover design, just replace the original cap with a good quality cap of the same value.

The best crossover mod you could hope to find for your Minumus 7s.
That is an even longer thread. I went through a 25% of the thread. I saw about 4 cross-overs, some schematics, some store bought and some home grown DIY showing with pictures and some expensive component parts.

Could you break it down. I don't necessarily want the BEST just upgrade it a little, most bang (sound) for the bucks. I assume the old cap in the cross over is tired..... Thanks
