Two amps enter, one amp leaves. Two mid '80's powerhouses collide in a winner takes all battle to the death. In the red corner weighing in at 160w stands the Sansui AU-G99X. With tons of controls and those pretty meters makes him hard to beat. In the blue corner weighing in at 130w stands the venerable Yamaha AX-900. An equal number of controls but a lack of display could be made up for with pre-out jumpers and the ability to be either a standalone amp or used as a preamp, it truly is two seperate components in one box.

There ya have it folks, the battle in my head. Only one can stay. I love my AX-900 but have come across a pristine AU-G99X. Please help me choose.

Hmm, they both seem too new, but each has a toroid, so ultimately I would need to hear them.Still leaning Sansui.

oops wait, I am seeing double, about the toroid, unless the Yamaha has one is inside that square transformer case.

I bet they have differences subtle enough that only owning both would illuminate a preference. They both look nice in pictures!
 
I had the yammy ax700 which is a model or 2 down from your 900. It was a very clean and almost sterile sounding unit. It couldn't hang with any of my sansui gear so away it went. I'll vote for keeping the sansui.
 
I have a sansui from this era and I would vote for it. The yamaha brand does not give enough imaging for my tastes, but the sansui has everything. Don't hesitate, sansui amps sell pretty fast where I come from.

I agree. It's like a smaller version of my M80 combined with my AX-900. Now you see my dilemma.:scratch2:

I do not know how these units compare in sound quality or what your preference in sound is, but as mentioned by JohnVF a direct comparison would clear that up for you.

However, I noticed that the Sansui is rated for 8 ohms operation only and that the Yamaha is fully rated for both 8 and 6 ohms operation with a dynamic power rating down to 4 ohms. The power rating of the Sansui might limit its use with some speakers unless its power supply is more robust than stated.

But, since it appears that the chosen unit is dedicated to the Happy Pile their power capabilities may not be a concern to you.

On look alone I prefer the Sansui.

The Sansui can do one pair of speakers at 4-6ohm. There is a selecter switch on the rear panel. Should also do two pairs at 8 ohm. The Yamaha may have more headroom but i can't find that particular spec listed for the Sansui to verify.

Actually my sig needs to be updated. The AX-900 is driving my upstairs system with a pair of AR srt330's and a pair of DCM KX8's. Looks like I will have to set up a side by side this weekend. :)
