Interested in preamplifiers

Hey, I'm interested in preamplifiers; how they might change my experience, if my system would accommodate one, and how they're hooked up. Is there a preamplifiers for dummies sticky? Thanks.

If you post some details about your system, I'm sure people would be happy to comment on the appropriateness of a preamp. It would also be useful to know whether you're talking about a phono preamp (aka phono stage), line preamp, or both.

The preamplifier does a few things
It acts like a control center, allowing you to plug various things into it such as a CD player, Record Player, tape player etc. It will do switching between these.
A preamp will boost each of the signals from the separate components to line level so it can be amplified. You need a line level signal for an amplifier to correctly function.

It will give also you volume controls and most likely tone controls such as bass/treble etc. Some preamps will give you more features such as cartridge loading for your turntable. Newer ones may have a DAC in them to convert a digital signal to an analog one.

There are benefits to a preamp versus an integrated. First it allows you to switch out the preamp or amplifier stage separately. Also it removes the preamp stage from the amp stage which can give a better sound as there can be less EMI/RFI interference. That does not mean however that all preamp/amp combos are superior to Integrated/Receivers. There is a vast difference in build quality and design of all components out there.
