Great sources for vinyl

You might want to check out Hot Topic, not only their website but in the stores, they have some surprising prices too... I have picked up all my Coldplay, and Radiohead vinyl there and they also have some classic old albums to. In my local store in Boondocks Indiana they have Queen, Judas Priest, Stray Cats, Metallica all 180 gram vinyl as low as $13.

Gemm

I took my first step into Gemm recently and bought one LP. The seller (who shows 100% customer satisfaction) graded the LP as VG+ which he defined as:

"VG+ Very Good Plus

Vinyl: May have scuff marks and signs of some wear but
will still play almost perfectly throughout, with only
"barely detectable" crackles or pops. A slight noise at the
begining is allowable, but the remainder must be nearly flawless.

Cover: May only have the slightest signs of normal wear."

The thing arrived today, and while it was well packaged, it was very noticably scuffed. After giving it a cleaning, I stuck it on the platter and gave it a spin. The crackles, pops and scratchiness were hardly "barely detectable" and were very prevelant throughout the whole album. 35 year old albums that I played continuously as a kid are in much better shape.

Finally, while the album was touted as an import and was in fact a German import, the cover was obviously not the original as it was an Atlantic pressing cover.

Is this typical? I'd send it back, but the hassle is not worth it.

I like Amazon. While they don't have every title, the prices are discounted, they offer free or inexpensive shipping, and if the vinyl is noisy or defective you can return the record for replacement and they cover return shipping. They'll even ship out a replacement copy before they receive the defective one.

Oddly enough, you can often find some good deals on amazon.co.uk, even factoring the shipping charges.

I do most of my buying with soundstagedirect.com because they're an AK sponsor and because Seth provides superb customer service.

anything good for canadians? I have some local shops that sell new and used records, so I technically don't need a website, but sometimes you find better prices

for online, only vinyl i bought on the web came from here:

www.interpunk.com
www.nerdalertrecords.com

Granted, all the new vinyl i buy has been punk and punk/ska.

and sometimes if your looking for something really specific, hit up the record label itself website. cheaper and also not having to deal with distributors. I have had some excellent luck going right to the source.

This is a great source for used LPs--some 45s and 78s as well. The guy is great to deal with, ships fast and has an interested way of packaging LPs for a safe journey. Not one I'd have thought of but I have to say it works!

He's good people and my only connection is as a satisfied customer. He has tones of stuff for $1 and most of his stuff is well below the usual prices and pretty much everything I've bought has been less than $5. His shipping prices are also extremely reasonable.

It's hit or miss as to what you'll find there, but if you find what you're seeking, it's a great source. I usually put in about one order a month. :thmbsp:

MacStereo, thank you so much for starting this thread. Now I know places other than Amazon.com to go, where I just ordered a 2 LP 180g version of Robert Plant & Allison Krauss' Raising Sand.

Got it on CD, but now that's going to start collecting serious dust with the vinyl version on the way, or I may let my mom have the CD.
