Is this where some Marantz values are going?

The seller has a brick & mortar store about 50 miles from me.
Their name Investment Audio says it all...
Anyone think that the $1752 + $80 shipping is an investment? Best of luck with that paying off.

I just put 6 of their “warm white” leds in my newly acquired 2230.
I changed the velum out too. :thumbsdn:

Sitting next to my 2220 with new velum & a lamp kit from dwojo the incandescent lamps produce the correct Marantz blue (Almost aqua) to my eyes. I think Cyan is pretty accurate description.
The LED equipped 2230 is a cobalt blue... way too blue for me.:yuck:

I cant imagine what the blue leds would look like ...Purple?.:headscrat

I guess I will be taking the 2230 apart & installing the correct incandescent lamps.
Oh well live & learn...there is a night & day difference in the color of the dial & meter
I guess I’ll buy a black face plate & sell my 2230 for 3X’s what I paid for it.:nono:

Cheers

Nothing sounds like the old days... Our host would have been better off with a good iPhone plug in system from Amazon.

It's not that people have more money than sense, at least typically. It's that they go "cool hunting" and have no idea what they are buying, ...

Yeah cool story, but it IS that people have more money than sense. That guy sounds like the typical clueless yuppie douchebag trying desperately for street cred, who probably never owned even a cheap stereo in his life, but just some MP3 device with earbuds.

I would have had to tell him his "cool stuff" sounded like ****, and why, but it wouldn't have done any good since those types never listen.

:butt1:

Speechless, people buy into the smoke and mirrors of vintage audio- seem nowadays you CAN polish a turd. Whoever bought that unit overpaid by 4 times its value but hey, it wasn't me so whatever. The seller of this unit is a good salesman, lets just say it's a godsend that it wasn't restored.

Example of the smoke: Say goodbye to the wonderful classic warm Marantz sound they expected. In order to preserve the original Marantz sound, it is best to keep the original capacitors if they are within tolerance and show no sign of leakage.

Right, cause the seller pulled and tested every single cap to test for leakage.

Ugh, another "professional" "rebuilder" that claims the old caps are better. I never make a killing when I've sold fully refurbed units on eBay because I simply list what is done without the flowery BS. But I can live with myself and my customers are always so pleased with the sound. Best of all, it will stay out of the dump.

Randy, Your way is the correct and honest way to approach this. There have always been crooks and there always will be. Seems like this is a clear example of dishonesty on the part of the seller - and lack of knowledge on the part of the potential buyers.

Generally, I don't like the LEDs either, but people do go crazy for them. Here's a 4240 that I'm currently working on, but did use LEDs. I used the "warm white" bulbs, replaced the vellum paper, and this is what I got:

I was actually really surprised, as most of the time I think the LEDs look far too harsh. Anyway, I guess it can look okay.

Its the Lack of Integrity, the seller has, in calling it "Restored" that bothers us.

I will be listing a restored unit soon, and i will be Correcting that falsehood in a Grand way.

As far as the Leds go, I just put the "blue" 3light units in my 2325 w/new paper and its beautiful. I'm building the selector leds now.

I run my unit all day long. For me it is an upgrade, to no longer have to worry about the heat distorting the plastic deflector. Besides i need them extra Watts:D

Its not Factory, its not Stock. I call it an upgrade because it permanantly fixes a problem that definitely exists. There again, The car analogy twisted to my business. I spend my days fixing transmissions, and using aftermarket re-egineered parts to correct the factories mistakes.:nono:

I loaded some pictures and see the meter color change like mentioned. The camera brings it out more than i can see it. I did not change the paper on them yet. I figured i'd do it when i do the upper lights.

No doubt, I completely understand that. It's unfortunate that people don't do more research before opening their wallets in order find out what they actually want.

Really, I just wanted to show off what I thought was a pretty quad! Not really a great addition to the conversation, but I took a shot...

Maybe its time to do a "Definition of a Correctly Restored Marantz for New Buyers" Thread

Add a "Do not be fooled by slick sellers with fancy words and their incorrect, new Capacitor "Merchants of Doubt" spins and yarns.

Take this thread, pull the wording from our comments and make a sticky out of it.

Its the same people that do not donate to public Television, but have no problems watching it. Its one thing if money is tight. But another if you just don't care about others.

I was on another audio board and was lamenting the same thing.
A $50 receiver and some work and you have a pretty decent audio setup.
When you hit $1000+ on some of this stuff, no thanks.
You could go buy a modern set up that would sound great and NOT
be likely to pop a cap in a couple of months.
Of course, a few years ago I was paying $5-20 for Marantz stuff
needing a bit of care. Those days are gone, right along with all my hair.

Agree. Don't like LEDs on collectable vintage.

I'm in the same boat because of how strong the freshening up using the original tech does. One exception I'm fighting to a decision on now.....white LEDs' on the Onkyo TX-XX00 MKII series. (That original intent for that "crystal white look" may be plus'ed with LED?)

Still.....when I see the glaring LED re-lamp on gear, I look at it as an added expense to convert back and stuff that gets priced as if it has had a full intelligent servicing? I'd use more patience (and an MP3/earbud combo) first. The "real deal" in servicing and originality is a different story......decided to use LEDs' on those Onkyos' (just now) so to hell with originality I guess.

That is the same result I got with new velum & warm white LED’s.
I am not a fan. I prefer the correct Cyan dial color .

Different strokes... my other 1/2 likes the LED cobalt blue better than the vintage Marantz cyan:dunno:

I agree with you. I prefer LEDs when it comes to Marantz.

I gotta say that the Cobalt blue makes it much more difficult to read the dial (imo). The lamps allow me to be able to read the numbers from further away.

I do not understand why people are so obsessed with blue dials. I understand that when blue led were novelty and cost over $10 each there was an excuse. But today? Yellow or orange looks much more appropriate. I replaced meter lights in my SET tube amp from original blue to yellow. Now they match color of 845 tube filaments perfectly.

Shows there are still many persons out there with too much money.

Actually we don't really have an idea --- we never see if a payment truly goes through on eBay. A few weeks ago there was a Kenwood L- stack in VA for a fair price listed on eBay, it indeed "sold" but several days later the seller called me saying he still has it. Of course, eBay shows the item as being sold and paid.
