Janszen z900

Does anybody have any impressions of the Janszen z900 speakers?

They would be my first dive into the electrostatics and I am thinking of pulling the trigger.

I had 2 pairs of those big boys. They were top of the line. Great tweeters. Do the tweeters still work? The power supply will need to be rebuilt if it hasn't been done.

The gentleman said he has had no issues since one tweeter was replaced years ago. I am also grabbing SAE Mark XXIII too.

How would you describe the sound and are the difficult speakers to get working properly? They look to be in mint cosmetic condition from the pics he sent.

I am going to see these tonight, pretty sure I will be taking the amp home with me, not so sure about the speakers though. It has been hard to find any information on these online. I am really curious as to the sound quality and where they stack up with other vintage cabinet speakers of that era.

I took a chance on pair of EV 6's before and love them (daily drivers), if they sound near as nice as them I will be kicking myself for not grabbing them. He is moving so does not have them hooked up.... hmmm

If you have had the chance to listen to these speakers I would really appreciate the your impressions.... he wants 4 bills for it all and I am really on the fence....

Every pair of those I have heard, and I used to sell them, sounded great. For a while Alterman Audio in New Orleans was the only Janszen dealer. Good luck.

The only larger hybrid using the Janszen designed tweeter was the much later Z824HP that had 2 12" woofers and 2 banks of 4 series II stat panels. I always found the earlier models like the 900s had a better transition from the woofer to stat panel. I had a set of 900s that were replaced by the Janszen designed full range KLH Nine stats. Seemed only way to truly step up while keeping the benefits and great sound of the mids and per range unique to the panels. The 824 handled more power but because of the acoustic suspension design the bass had less control and speed as well as the transition issue and was darker sounding when the woofer took over. With careful setup the 824 did well and even much better with bi-amping the problem could be overcome.

The woofers do not use foam or rubber surrounds so no issue there and the Series I tweeters unless over driven are pretty reliable.

The power supply should be rebuilt as it likely has a selenium and the crossover caps replaced. I prefer oil caps when I used to rebuild the JansZens years ago. Seemed to keep the air more balanced and sounded smoother.

If a question of money, spend it on the speakers and let the amp slide, it is nothing special and a lot are around. Much easier to ship than the JansZens if you went to buy the speakers later.
