JBL 4312 speakers - $550

Man I really don't know what I'm looking for! My musical tastes are all over the place, so maybe a neutral sounding wall mount bookshelf speaker that will only be run by my Marantz 2240. Preferably walnut, but black will do. No wife acceptance factor involved. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Do you have a threshold of pain price wise?

Given the power available from your amp a pair that will sound good with your amp is the primary consideration.

Speakers that I have or do have that sound good with a lower powered amp are EPI 100, Dynaco A25, RSL 3300, 3400 and Magnificent, JBL L19, Dahlquist M905, M&K satellites with a sub and Time Window 500.

Actually a decent powered sub with almost any pair of speakers will add a lot of dimension to your music.

I don't want to spend over $250 at the moment. I found a pair of Dynaco A25's for $200, but I was too late. Bookshelf speakers are more than enough for me at the moment. I'll be on the lookout for the speakers you mentioned, 62sunbeam. Thanks!

You need to become a AK subscriber so you can use barter town.

Those a25s would have to be pretty cherry to be worth $200.

I'll keep an eye out.

I saw some JBL 4311's for $450 and L36's for $350 the other day, but can't tell if those are good prices. I need to be into this for awhile, so I can see the whole price fluctuation, from high to low all across the board. Thanks

Too much, $350 would be top dollar for a mint set. They sound pretty good, especialy with a Marantz, but for that price you can get better speakers.

I would say you are out of your mind at $350 for a mint set. If you know anyone or have some at this price I will buy them. $500-$600 is the game. I never see them at $350...

The JBL 4313bs, L100Ts and L100t3s, L80ts, L80t3s, 4410s, and L5s, and L7s all are more accurate and most especially have a more accurate high end, and often can be found cheaper than then 4311s, 4312a, or L100s.
Where do the 4412s fit in?

When I got my JBL 4312s about 3 months ago two pairs were being auctioned on ebay. Both pairs ended within a day of each other and sold for $600 and some dollars. Current ebay prices show about $400 - $500 with some unsold within that price range...

Mine were a lucky find with 035Tia tweeters. I enjoy them very much and the mirrored imaging is sweet.

Seems like the titanium tweeter is the thing to look for. Isn't the aluminum tweeter the one that's real harsh?

Had a chance recently to hear 4312, L5 and 4412. My conclusion is I want to stay away from the 43xx series. L5 are very nice but I preferred the big woofer sound of the 4412 out of all of them. Also like the fact that they image best on their side, as my plan is to put my"rock speakers" on top of the KEF so I can switch back and forth according to type of music. Now to try and find a pair!

My favorite "affordable" JBL is the almost unknown SVA2100. They have a silk dome tweeter with a wave guide type horn. They're not bookshelf size, but they can do it all. I had a pair of L1s with the titanium tweeter and found them a tiny bit strident on the top. I bet they would sound awesome with tubes. I think 4412s and L100s go for so much because of the sentimental value placed on them by guys in their 50s who remember them from their glory days.

A person's opinion on speakers is a lot like a person's opinion on Ford vs GM or chocolate ice cream vs. vanilla ice cream...it's all personal. Someone may have heard a specific set of speakers and didn't like them at all, and the next person who hears them may believe they're the best they ever heard. A lot of a person's opinion can also be based upon the music that was heard, the size of the room, the furnishings in the room etc, etc. etc.

The best way to be happy with what you buy is to hear it in as close to your environment as possible (not always easy to do) and make up your own mind. Try to listen to as many kinds as you can and you will probably develop an opinion that you will be comfortable with.

P.S. Some people only like the most expensive speakers they can find or afford.

So what did Derek, our OP, finally end up with, if anything yet? Our thread is only a year old!

I am consistently amazed at the low prices the L100t3 and L80t3 command on the market, at least in my area. $350 for a mint set is common. I have had 4311s and replaced them with the L100t3 back in 1989. I have been very happy with the ever since. There aren't many speakers that I would replace them with. (Altec Model 19 is one) A good friend has the L100t in a room much like yours and they sparkle. I don't know if the LA market is much different than mine, but I would think JBLs would be affordable due to their availability. Keep an eye open for them, especially if you are looking for the West Coast sound. I also agree that the L20t3 is a nice bookshelf speaker. It sounds much larger that it is. They share the same excellent tweeter with the L100t3. I use them for my center and rear spks in my surround system with the L100t3. Good Luck!

The L100T3 has such a cheapish looking/feeling vinyl cabinet, no?

Whereas the earlier JBLS use what, a real oak veneer? They simply look better than the 80's JBLs.

Not according to the original brochure and owner's manual: "every exposed surface is finished with furniture grade, hand-rubbed oak or walnut veneer." It does look somewhat different from the L100T but not vinyl IME.
