JBL 4435 Restoration

Thanks so much, Bart; I really appreciate that and I am still amazed at your ability to find all these things. I'm listening to the 4435s right now and enjoying them very happily.

I recall this all starting out back in maybe October or November, sitting in my office in Pasadena and surfing Craigslist, missing out on a pair and thinking ... man, I'd love to haul some home in my car. A few pleading PMs to you, and months later, here I am. Thanks again, my friend.

I am using a Svs Sb-13 ultra Sub with mine. Bass is unreal.

I guess if you think the bass is better with your Sb-13 then one can hardly argue but....I'd compare it to adding more bacon to your bacon to get more bacon flavor. I also have to think the acoustics of each room would play a huge part in what each of us may hear.

Hey Zonkers,

You are a talented guy and have done these justice, and given many of us inspiration to look for and keep forging ahead with projects like this.

This is the way a restoration is done.

Cheers!
Glenn

Thanks!! :D Bubbles would let his kitties listen to them.

We had my brother and my in-laws visiting this evening for dinner; Diana Krall barely audible in the background. I so wanted to crank them up ...

Hi Zonker92,

Great Job on the rebuild, the veneer work looks great!

I did not realize it, but I think we have a mutual friend in the area. I grew up in Hanford... small world. He mentioned an AK user by the name of Zonkers... I had to put it together..

Nonetheless Cool beans man, and great work on the cabinets, they look spectacular! :thmbsp:

Thanks, John! Someone who knows me? I do know some of the local audio buffs; it's a fairly small circle here.

rvito, I do think the Radians sound a little smoother to me that the Tis; not sure though. I love how the have AL domes for smoothness and Mylar surrounds for durability; best of both worlds. I posted a review on the Parts Express listing for them

Thanks! It's true; even the little steps seemed to take forever. I got stalled for weeks several times. I have two last tasks (waxing the veneer and swapping out a few screws in back) and I'm still procrastinating; maybe I just don't want to finish. :D Blasting some Purity Ring now.

Just out of curiosity, how much veneer did these monsters take? I have a pair of Marantz HD-880'S that need some work and your source looks like a great place to go to. BTW....these look FANTASTIC!

The Package by APC has a massive bass line. It is always too loud on any speaker I play it on, but I love it.

I wish I could hear those. Expert work! Props to you and mech both!

Complete reveneer on the 4301b's? Are your's in bad shape?

I'm on the fence. The good news is the veneer is 98% intact and thick. The bad news is, there are small mounting bracket holes on two panels of each box, plus some genius painted them black.

I have been working on one of the bottom panels to see if I can get the paint off, including the paint embedded in the grain. So far, the results are OK, but not perfect. Since I have this extra veneer left over it's very tempting just to re-cover them.
